Really hope Robby wins. He took 8th last time and if you look at the shot taken. He pushed it hard. With the team he has this year it looks good!

Cancelled over security concerns.

The 2008 Dakar Rally race has been canceled due to security concerns and a "direct threats against the race issued by terrorist groups," the Amaury Sport Organization (ASO), which sponsors the race, said Friday.

This is the first time in the Dakar's 30-year history that the controversial car-motorcycle Sahara Desert race has been cancelled.

"Following several consultations with the French government, in particular the ministry of foreign affairs, and taking into account its firm recommendations, the organizers of the Dakar have taken the decision to cancel the 2008 edition of the rally," the ASO said.

Wow, how sad is that. Terrorists win again.

The ASO, added the statement, is aware of the financial meaning canceling the race entails. "The Dakar is a symbol and nothing can destroy symbols,"

Except for terrorism, apparently

I'm sure this entry would have completed the race unharmed

I could see the headlines now "Team Hummer finishes 1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th,6th,7th ....... in the Paris Dakar 2008 Rally ....... contestants were awarded additional prizes for the number of al-Queda kills displayed on their bumpers" :giggling:

The Terror problem is certainly worldwide. Unfortunately the "world" leaves it up to the stupid Americans as they like to call us to bankrupt our country working against this crap.
A shame that folks like Robby Gordon and others plans and dreams for this project go up in smoke over some ass wipes:twak:

2009 website is up and running.

They promise an amazing course, a 9000 km loop including 6000 of specials between Buenos Aires, Valparaiso and Buenos Aires. The Dakar rally, the legendary event of the off-road rally discipline, will for the first time go to South America in 2009.
FWIW, Robby Gordon lost $4.5 million from the cancellation last year's DAKAR. That's probably what drove his switch to Dodge for this year's NASCAR season. He's also been penalized by NASCAR, under appeal, trying to land a full-time sponsor, and will struggle to stay in the top 35 in points. It's starting out tough for him.

Gordon might be innocent, but shouldn't be surprised

Maybe the African nations will start paying attention to the terrorist problem their and take matters into their own hands now. It's gotta hurt to lose a competition of that size.
