Well crap...I am losing my job....
I found out two days ago that I am being laid off in April...
Time to find a new job and way to make a living.... I was with this company for 9 years as of Feb 1st The company is downsizing and has sold 2/3rd of its business to another company and they "cant justify" my position full time anymore and need me to work out a "part time" contract with them. W T F! I need a full time job to make a living! Who can live and support their family on a "part time contract" after being a senior manager with a company for 9 years! This will work out though, the wifey and I are looking at several different options as we already know we must relocate and simplify our living style to make things work. I really feel for te so many people that have had to go through this BS economy in the past 5 years. |
Re: Well crap...I am losing my job....
Well, be thankful you have time to make plans. And congrats on the positive outlook, too many people don't have that ability and just get depressed.
Good luck. BTW, what field are you in? You never know who may have something for you. |
Re: Well crap...I am losing my job....
Man that sucks, Get busy with Monster.com and other resources. Check with your employer see if they have any outplacement services to help you with your next step.
There is life after outsourcing:beerchug: |

Re: Well crap...I am losing my job....
I am so sorry to hear this. I wish you the best of luck in finding something, perhaps even better. Seems that jobs don't care nowdays how long or how good someone is and that's just sad. Best of luck and prayers.

Re: Well crap...I am losing my job....
I went through the same thing this past June when our office closed, I'd been there for 7 years as the regional engineer. Since I didn't want to move to the home office in Atlanta, I opted for the severance package.
While the initial announcement can hit you like a ton of bricks, don't think of it as a negative, instead it's an opportunity to start another chapter of your life. I've collected arcade games for the past 15 years, so I designed my own version and now build them from scratch, cabinets and all. I'm sure I'll go back to the corporate world again, but this suits me fine for now. ![]() ![]() |

Sorry to hear it, B.
Are you gonna move out of TX? |
Re: Well crap...I am losing my job....
So sorry to hear the news. At least you have some time to figure things out. Networking makes a huge difference. Post the type of work / position you're looking for and perhaps some of the folks here (in your line of work) can PM you with some connections. You never know. Best of luck to you.

Re: Well crap...I am losing my job....
Thanks for all the kind words everyone. This is a very hard time for us. I am walking away with a nice bonus at the end and we are trying to decide if I want to go back to work for someone or start our own business.
These topics have become very stressful and descisions and goals have to be defined very soon to achive them. We are looking at buying an existing day care business or relocating and starting one on our own. In addition to, I am sending our resumes like crazy just in case. I have worked as an IT Director for 9 years for a private aviation company and am very "set mentally" for a senior management position. There arent many out there in DFW although there are tons of "desktop or admin" positions, so I may just have to take a pay cut and keep on moving forward. My 4 year degree is in business management and minor in psychology. I also have an associates in network engineering from back in 97 when that was all that was offered. I have a lot of professional experience in Law and the realestate markets from working with many firms years back as a consultant. But again no degree in the field. I would LOVE to go to work for a law firm or realestate firm where I could apply IT management experience while also continuing my educaiton and obtain my license to sell. I have always been a great "salesman" or "closer" as a consultant and was voted #2 in the top 10 IT consultants in the Dallas Business Journal back in 1998. I left the consulting firm in 99 to work for a client which is where I have been for 9 years until the sell out. So, I am very uneasy about going out to market myself and more comfortable with starting something myself. The company i work for now have offered me a contract position and to keep my benefits for the time being as they determine if they really can not live without me or not. Long story short, before 9\11 I ran a staff of 8. Shortly after then the aviation business was hit hard by new regulations and the company went into massive debt due to some bad initiatives they took on which caused us to start trimming back. So now I am the only one left in the dept titled as the IT Director but in reality, I do it all sys admin, budgeting, spending, desktop support the whole nine yards for 11 office locaitons base in 5 states supporting 250 - 300 users and 18 servers. At the age of 34, I need to be in a stable env to help me continue planing and obtaining long term security for my familys future. If anyone is in need of my experience, by all means let me know, as I am willing to relocate anywhere, even to europe. :beerchug: |

Re: Well crap...I am losing my job....
Just remember that things always work out for the best. Quick story. Back in 2000 I'd bought a real estate company. Next thing you know 9/11 hits and 6 months later my wife loses her job. Seriously thought we were going to have to take drastic measures. Just as one door closed (my wife losing her job) another one opened....my business exploded and now we're ranked in the top 100 companies in our franchise out of 3000 companies.
You will find your stride...the road in life is bumpy...hang in there and life will be good! |

I have to agree with Mike Jr and the whole "makes life worth living mantra." Things are not as they seem. And don't forget about school either. I walked away from "6 figures" to go back to school fulltime. It's been one of the best decisions thus far. We started a business on the side, with the intention of walking away from it. Well, it's been very productive to say the least. |
Re: Well crap...I am losing my job....
They pull this kind of thing all the time in my business - offshore oil drilling - the funny thing is that whenever I get laid off from a "Staff" position they rehire me as a "Contractor" for twice the money.
I am working on a project in Kazakstahn at the moment for one of the majors - they offered me a staff position with them last month - the offer went exactly like this. "would you be interested in a staff position within the company" "Hmm maybe" "Well we would love to have you - but it would be for significantly less money than we are paying for you as a contractor - now if you choose to turn down the offer we would obviously keep you here under your current contract" "Ehhhh - OK I have tought about it - NO" What dumbass thought that was a good recruitment line - I loved the use of the word "Significantly" Anyway mate - it sounds like they still need you there - go contractor - stick it to them big time - if you are in a field that it is difficult to find replacements then you have them in the palm of your hand. Downsizing is a term invented solely by beancounters who know shag all about actually running a business - trust me if they need you they will pay for you - get your own health insurance - start up your own corporation and run with them. All the while looking for the next project. |
