Shreveport to have layoffs

GM's Shreveport plant to lay off 68 Friday By The Associated Press Friday, February 15 2008 var sburl4961 = window.location.href; var sbtitle4961 = document.title;var sbtitle4961=encodeURIComponent("GM's Shreveport plant to lay off 68 Friday"); var sburl4961=decodeURI("http://wgso.com/content/view/4576/"); sburl4961=sburl4961.replace(/amp;/g, "");sburl4961=encodeURIComponent(sburl4961);SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) ? General Motors Corp. is cutting production at its Shreveport plant and 68 people will be laid off, officials confirm. "We're going from 47 units to 40 units an hour," Gaylord Tice, the plant's labor manager, said Thursday.
Days earlier, GM reported a 2007 net loss of $38.7 billion and said it will offer a new round of buyouts to its 74,000 hourly employees who are represented by United Auto Workers.
Most of the Shreveport workers being laid off are on the second shift, and will be officially laid off at the end of their shift today, Tice said.
GM's Shreveport plant has representatives on staff to assist laid-off employees with any benefit issues and to help them apply for unemployment assistance, Tice said.
There will be no production at the Shreveport plant next week due to inventory adjustments, Murray said. Workers will return Feb. 25.
Of the 2,100 employees at GM's Shreveport plant, about 1,200 are hourly workers.
The assembly plant makes the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon and HUMMER H3 and, since 1981, has shipped more than 4 million trucks.
