(H3T GVWR) - (Curb Weight) = WTF?
I was really liking the idea of the H3T, until I briefly looked at the specs. With the V8, the max payload is 1,031 lbs. That means, if you put four 180-lb camper/hunter dudes in there, and do not add a single extra pound of UCP or a winch, you can load up for the camping/hunting trip with a total of 310 lbs of gear (appx 75-lbs per person) before you exceed the max payload of this "truck." If you add a winch and/or extra UCP, you must probably go deer hunting without any gear or rifles at all.

What is it with the I5?

That is strange. GM is noted for understating its ratings. However that sounds very low. The 06 with the I5 is rated about 1500lbs payload...
You might reason with the extension on the H3T it would go higher in payload. Sounds like its strictly a 1/2 ton pick up. I would have figured 3/4 especially with the V8 out front. So much for reckoning! |

I would say it is a half ton truck!

With out digging into it, I would say that the 1031lbs refers to bed payload not gross payload. |
Re: (H3T GVWR) - (Curb Weight) = WTF?
Just saw a 11-08 Motor Trend article that stated the I5 rating is only 60lbs greater than the v8 on the H3T for total payload. This is due to the extra lbs on the aluminum V8 over the Aluminum block I5.
Soo the H3T payload is Basically 1100lb or just over 1/2 ton with the I5 Base engine. That is the rating based on GM records for understatement of parameters. Bet the actual s are much higher... |

Nope. The GVWR listed by Hummer for the H3 Alpha is 6,001 lbs. The GVWR listed by Hummer for the H3T is also 6,001 lbs, and "6,100 lbs with the V8." The regular I-5 H3 also has a GVWR of 6,001 lbs. In each instance, Hummer states that GVWR "includes vehicle, passengers, equipment and cargo." The curb weight of the H3A is 4,883 lbs and the curb wieght of the V8-H3T is 5,069 lbs. They all must have roughly the same suspension (thus the same GVWR). Thus, the lightest H3 (the basic model) has the highest (1,306 lbs) max payload (i.e. GVWR minus curb wieght) and the heavier vehicles with the same suspensions and same GVWR have lower max payloads. So, basically, Hummer put the same suspension on the V8-H3T as it put on the basic I-5 H3, and consequently the payload drops from 1,306 lbs to 1,031 lbs--more of the GVWR must go to the weight of the truck itself rather than potential payload. Obviously, Hummer should have beefed up the suspension when making a heavier truck so that it did not have a laughably-weak max payload. |

Just add a few more leaves in the rear spings....

I just talk to an engineer on the project, he said he believes the listed curb weight includes 4 passengers @ 200# and a full tank of fuel, but is going to double check for me. He agreed that the cargo payload of the truck should be over 1000#. |

Yeah I know that particular article. I'm finding it right now to post the link here. Thus, I agree that the lightest H3 has the highest max payload |
