Hummer in the Rockies
 

Out visiting my son in Telluride, CO we decided to see how the H2 does on Imogene Pass compared to his H3 - he likes the H2 better, no suprprise there! This is one trail that everyone with a Hummer should do once in their lives. The views are spectacular at 13,000 ft at the crest, we lucked out with a crystal clear day.
The H2 ran cool and no boiling at 13,000 ft (with the warm day I'll bet the pressure altitidue was close to 14,000 ft). Most of the snow is gone and my biggest concern was going under some of the rock overhangs and traffic coming the other way with sheer drop offs. Telluride is still one of my favorite 4 X 4 areas in the US but was a little crowded with the Bluegrass Festival coming up. With all the construction and building, you would never know we are in a recession in Telluride.
We counted 1 H1, 5 H2s and 4 H3s on the main drag in Telluride, yesterday. These people appreciate Hummers!

I will second the previous replies, and ask to see some pics please! As this is such a spectacular trail, your photos must be outstanding. Hope to see some soon and thanks a lot!

Thinking of driving out to Co. and Ut at the end of the month. I'd love to hook up with some of you along the way, and better yet, do some wheelin'!.

I have no plans as to my route, just winging it.

I only have done Black Bear once, while my son has done it a half dozen times in his H3. The trail is rated MODERATE and there have been four deaths on the trail in the last five years. Three in two rollover accidents and one heart attack that was altitude related. Also one serious bear mauling by a person on an ATV near the falls. That aside, the views are breathtaking!
The weather is typical of the mountains. We were at the summit and it was crystal clear with unlimited visibility & 10 minutes later from out of nowhere a cloud formed and came over and the visibility went downhill fast and after the fog cleared the winds went from light to 40 to 50 mph. I've never done MOAB, but my son who has, says it's much harder, but Black Bear has more steep drop offs.

You start off in San Juan County on the old mining trail and you say to yourself what's the big deal about this! Then you get to the stairs and the switchbacks and there's no turning around. In some places it's barely wide enough for an H1 and the drop off is over 1000 feet. We were blessed by 4 hours of picture perfect weather and 10 minutes of deep fog.
