Transmission Temperature
I've noticed that driving in the 98F temperatures we've been having my transmission has been running at about 190. How does your transmission temperature run in hot weather?

In 100 degree temps mine runs around 175-190 range.....when it's that warm out it's gonna run about same temp as engine temp, which is usually around 200....if it gets higher I'd be concerned

I installed the larger cooler mentioned on this site right after I purchased my 05.
In AZ with temps at 112 my tranny temp barely reads 150. The cooler seems to work great. I've had it on for about 8000 miles so far |

So I've asked this question a few times. I was in the mountains in February, and it was -20F and the tranny, while pulling a trailer with 4 mountain snowmobiles on it (500# each - probably 1.5 tons total weight with trailer) and I was running trans temps as hot as 225-230F. Much too hot in my opinion, but when I talked to the dealer, they *claim* that this is normal and that it could go as high as 250F.
In my racing experience, anything under 200F is good, anything over 210F is bad, so it concerns me when it hits 225F and I can *smell* it! :( Jay |

Most everyone installs the Tru-Cool Tranny Cooler. I did it and like mentioned run 150ish. Last week I pulled an empty 24 ft Haulmark Trailer about 3500 LBS and ran about 190.

The Tru Cool tranny cooler is worth every penny. I installed it about 6 months ago and have never gone over 150 deg. If your not worried about the temp at least bypass the radiator. It's a tight fit but worth the headache.

I am very interested in doing this myself. Could someone list all of the part # needed to do a very proffesional job. I would like all fittings to fitting where possible. Has anybody done a write up yet? If not I think I will do one, with photos.

I installed the cooler like this. I removed the factory cooler the front of radiator. Drilled out the rivets from the bracket so I could put them back on later. On the passenger side of the radiator is where the stock lines are for the internal cooler, remove lines and install fittings and place a hose between them to bypass creating a U shape. You will have to cut the bottom line going back into the transmission, put a piece of hose on it and run it to the cooler. The output line cut the line and run the hose to the other side of the cooler. Any cut lines I used a pipe cutter then double flanged them to make a mushroom. The only problem I have run into is the positioning of this huge cooler. Right now its hard to close the hood because it is hitting the 2 bolts for the bottom brackets. I will have to reposition this later. So how does it work, maybe to good. I drove to work today (55F) and the temp never broke 130F, and most of the time on the highway (80MPH) it stayed around 110F. I am not sure if this is ideal or not, as I just went by the recommedations here. So if anybody knows about this please let me know????? While doing this I changed the filter and fluid. After I changed the filter, I took the upper radiator transmission line off and put about 5" of rubber hose on it. Then clamped it to a big bucket. I had my wife start the H2 up, and as it pumped the fluid out I poured new fluid in until it ran out cherry red. So while I was at it I decided to change all of the fluids- radiator, diffs & trans case. |

Anyone try a fan on the factory cooler??? I have been told that a larger cooler will affect the AC. :confused:

Just an update to my recent install.
I just came back from vacation in northern Italy. The temps were around 90 with very steep inclines. The temp got up to about 170 at the very highest, but normally hung around 150. It was slightly cooler in the Swiss Alp but the mountains were quite steep, the temp never broke 170 there either. So the temps do start to rise it just takes a little while before they get there. Seems now for the most part they hang around 150 after driving for 30 minutes or so, otherwise around 130. |
