satin or gloss black powdercoating?
 

so, ive been hearing some pretty nasty stories about the chrome plating on the new wheels i got. Mazzi Hulk 20x10's. i got a price from a local company that will sandblast the chrome off and powdercoat the wheels for 450 bucks. so, for all season use what should i go with? assuming both hold up just as well as each other, there shouldnt be an issue with the road salt on either finish , right? gloss black or satin black? heres a picture of my truck if it helps decide.

I voted Satin Black because the gloss black would be too shiny. Especially for rims.

Use the same finish as the Center's on your Camero! Gloss will look like doo doo. LOL Satin is my vote!

It was probably one of my posts. If the chrome is bubbling/flaking on those wheels you absolutly will need to polish the rims after removing the chrome. Those rims are cast aluminum, alot of imputities in the material. Now I have 24" rims, the guy doing them had about 1.5 hours polishing each wheel before powdercoating.

I can take a picture of one of my side hood vents that had far less peeling and didn't get polished. You can see the pot marks through the powedercoating.

Also you are going to loose the fake plastic bolt plugs along the outside of the spokes. There was no way to get them out intact.

If you copy me, I'm going to kick your ass ;) My wheels are black now. But I'm going to drill/tap those holes, put some short hex bolts in there painted SOM to tie my body color into the rims.

Your next cluster**** is going to be the center caps are only available in chrome...even on the black mazzis, they give you chrome. A hard chrome shop (not the same as decorative chrome) can dip those center caps and remove all the chrome off the plastic, then you can paint them.

my wheels are brand new in the box. shouldnt be too much of an issue.

as far as the plastic bolts around the outside, i dont care if those have to come out. it will just make the wheel that much easier to clean. not a big fan of those bolts anyways.
and the center cap....can a sandblasster strip that chrome off without breaking the cap? if not, ill probably see if the company doing the sandblasting and powdercoating has any recommendations. maybe just paint over the chrome.

not sure on sandblasting the center caps. My concern would be the amount of abrasion required to cut the chrome- would damage the plastic. I just had my upper grill sandblasted, thats plastic and it came out great. But it really wasn't the actual abrasion that removed the chrome, it was the heat. They would hit it lightly and the chrome would ripple up, they would peel off a chunk by hand then go some more. I'm filling in the hummer letters on that grill, so my filler will cover up any damage from the sandblasting.

I know lowes/home depot carries the acid that will remove that chrome if you want to try doing it yourself.

I tried oven cleaner on them first and it didn't do anything. Since their brand new you can probably get away a self etching primer then paint. If it doesn't hold up, then you can try a more drastic approach.

I'll get some pictures of the wheels next time im out at the shop, probably wont be untill monday. The black makes the wheels appear alot larger than they actually are. People keep thinking I sold my 24's and bought 30's.

lol...yeah if you can post up pictures, id love to see what it looks like. ill probably be taking my wheels in for powdercoating next week. so ill see what kind of options they have for me.

You should be able to simply rough the plastic-chrome with some course sandpaper and have them painted.

By the way, what rim savers/beadlock rings did Humvee21 use on those black rims? I'm guessing this must be an aftermarket rim with bolts on the rim, it does look really nice though.

****, oven cleaner did strip the chrome off, but it left the copper layer under it. Then I took them to the hard chrome shop and were stripped down to bare plastic.

You just sprayed it on and it ate it off? Or did you scrub it? If I can get it down to the copper I think that will be a better base for paint than the chrome.

Sprayed it on, let it set (keeping it from drying out) and it ate it all off.

Took the wheels in for powdercoating today. Should be ready in a week or so. I'll post pics when I get them back
