Engine heating up do to hot weather
 

I was driving my hummer today in 109 degree weather and my engine started to heat up almost to the red ! Is there any recommendations to keep it cooler ? I'm about to drive it through death valley where its extremely hot and I might be pulling a small boat on top of that... any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I live in Vegas where it has been consistently over 110 this week peeking at 114 today and my H2 never got over the 200 mark on both gages.

Are you sure you have water in it?

mine is an 06 in AZ, temps are around 115 almost everyday here and I never break the 200 mark with the AC blowing. What year is yours?

You could check several things............

Water pump for leaks
Thermostat
radiator fluid level and condition
Overflow coolant tank level
Hoses for blockage

Don't know what year you have ,but if it has a clutch fan make sure it is working . ;)

Mine is a 2005 it has no leaks and resevoir is filled ?

I'm kind of leaning toward your thermostat being stuck closed. If this is true, then your engine would het up and get hot becuase the thermostat isnt opening up to let the "cooler" water from the radiator into the engine to cool the motor back down and circulate the hot water back to the radiator for another cooling.

I could be wrong, but if you have no leaks on the ground, then the coolant has to be in there somewhere, its just not getting moved around well enough.

If it were the water pump, you'd see that leak from the front of the motor. Most water pumps have a "weeping" hole that helps to signal this.

You have failed to tell us what kind of driving... we talking about highway or city/stop/go traffic?

If your temp is fine / drops back down at highway speed, id say its your clutch fan.

My H2 constantly ran hot, it was back at the dealer countless times and they couldn't figure out the problem. I tried replacing thermostats, add aux tranny coolers and finally installed a Ron Davis Radiator. Never had a problem since. I was shocked when they took out the stock radiator how thin it was. The Ron Davis Radiator has a much larger capacity but still drops in to the stock location. I highly recommend this upgrade, mine has been installed for about 4 years now and my temp never gets over 180 degrees no matter what conditions I am driving. The link is below:

I dont have one yet, its on my list. That is the best radiator you can get, quality that is hard to touch these days. Everyone on the forums that had gotten one couldn't say enough good things out it.

I had similar heating issues here in Arizona, especially when towing. Replaced the stock radiator with a Ron Davis model. The water and tranny temps never move above normal even when towing. The Ron Davis radiator is almost an OEM replacement. The only modification was to trim some of the plastic around the radiator shroud. These radiators are not cheap, but they are worth every penny. Highly recommend this modification.
