Has anyone else experienced soft or mushy brakes after a day of off-roading? This is the second time I've noticed this. The pedal goes quite a ways down now.
Do you think I should take it in or is this normal? |

I got that problem during Moab.
It's due to repetitive stomping of the break peddle during those "OH SHIIIIT!" situations. ![]() I would call Tower. |

As you all know, GM puts on brakes that barely stop in regular driving situations--cheap bastards that they are.
The purpose of brake upgrades is not to reduce stopping distance but to reduce brake fade under stressful situations. What you are experiencing is normal for GM. Brake upgrades are expensive---believe me I have done two for myself. |
Fade..understood...when coming off the trail or when they are hot, but the truck has been sitting in the garage for 3 days. I got in it to fill 'er up before the gas prices go through the roof tonight, and there were hardly any brakes.

Maybe you lost some fluid when off-roading somehow?

Do any deep water crossing? Check your fluid(Brake) resevoir lids and make sure the seals are good. That or start going to the gym and do some leg strengthening excercises. |
They do feel spongy. We did some water on Sunday but not the time before when it happened.
I will check the fluid level and the seal of the lid, if that looks ok then I will probably give the dealer a call. |
The same thing happened to me after our trip to Paragon. We wheeled Saturday and Sunday the brakes were very mushy. It didn't last long so I chalked it up to lots of dirt and mud caked up on the brakes.

Powerwashing the engine might have been a factor. Better safe than sorry and have a pro look into it. |
Dennis is right--you may have a cut or nick in one of your brake lines or you have air/water in the lines--check the fluid level and then have your bakes blead.
This does not seem like something you should fool with. Replacing your stock brake lines with Stainless Steel braided brake lines is not that expensive if you off road a lot. |
I only experianced the problem for a few moments just after leaving Paragaon. The H2 was covered in mud and when I hit the brakes to pull into the gas station was when it happened. I checked the lines and looked for leaks but nothing. That was 1 month ago and havn't had a problem since.

Same as NJH2, mine were bad for a while after the Paragon weekend, but it cleared up and I haven't had any problems since. Must be all the dirt in the brakes that has to work its way out.

So I finally got off my ass and popped the hood. Took some pics of what I saw...I am taking it in to the dealer this week, but do you think this indicates the cap is not sealing tight? The cap didn't seem very toght, but I don't know what's normal on an H2. The level seemed fine.

So the tech at the dealer checked everything over, bled the lines, and we're back in business. Strong brakes again.
I know this wasn't major work, but I'm going to say this anyway. AL SERRA rocks! They had a complimentary hot chick sitting in the waiting area for me! I know this couldn't be a coincidence ![]() |
