I am new here, and thinking of buying a used h2. My question is should i be worried about high mileage h2's? Besides the tie rods, are there any other problems i should be aware of buying a used 03? Thanks

Congrats on the choice to buy an H2. You'll absolutely love it. I wanted one several years ago and I wish I had bought one then. The one I recently purchased is an '03 and has 53K miles.

The mileage is higher than I wanted but it was completely unmolested (it was waiting for me to do it), it was sunset orange and the price was right.

As far as the tie rod ends, unless you do any major off roadin', they'll probably be fine. I'm sure some of our more trail blazed members can comment.

What's wrong with the tie rods?

Remember Hummers have only been out for 3 years. Think about purchasing an extended warranty if you get an older model, just to have peace of mind. Definitely buy Orange if your getting an 03.

My 03 runs and acts like a champ-----I love it. You never know how one with 53 K was treated but congrats.

I would not be afraid to buy one with high miles.
With the lower price of high miles, you have room for repairs.

All GM products rattle, leak, or whistle somewhere so just hunt them down and fix them.

I am shopping too i really dont like the idea of an h2 with more than ..... say 20k on it but it all depends on who was driving it, i think the extended warranty is a great idea unless you are really comfortable with diagnosing and fixing problems on your own i think the extra couple grand would be well worth it but what the hell do i know? good luck

Thanks everyone for the advise. I appreciate it. The h2's that are in my price range have anywhere from 35k up to 57k miles. I am thinking of picking one up from ebay and flying out and driving it back. The prices are so much better than dealers around here. My budget is just around 32-34k.

So, are the tie rods bad or not? I re-read the faq and there is no listed problem there.

Thanks for that tie rod detail PARAGON. I have a chevy dealer 4 miles from my house. I want to pick up a spare set ,tie rods, and dont want to go to the dealer for twise the price, for the same thing.

I have an 03 with 65k miles and do moderate offroading(more the hunting type of offroading). I have had no tie rod problems and no serious problems at all. I bought the extended warranty for the piece of mind. Have'nt used it yet(knock on wood). Good luck with your purchase.

The people I see breaking tie-rods, are the ones that are runding over sized tires on there trucks, and not upgrading there tie-rods.

I do a lot of heavy off roading in my truck, and I am running the stock BFG All Terrain Tires, and I have not had any problems at all with my tie-rods. And I am running stock tie-rods.

The ones that I see that are breaking on the trails, has there tires in a bind (Tight against rocks) and then ther give the truck a lot of gas power and the tie-rod break, or they are running over sized tires and they do the same thing and they break.

This is just my 2 Cents on the tie-rods.

Just go buy one and stop worrying. BTW, some guys here on the East Coast replaced a tierod in 15 minutes a couple of weekends ago. Middle America and Westies take about 30 minutes to do the same.
