I want to add 1-2 5 gal (or so) cans to my gobi rack. Internet search and a search here pulled up a little but not as much as I had hoped.

What are you guys using? So far I like the ones offered by Gobi but I didn't like their $70 price. Is there a place to get them cheaper?

Is there a better alternative? Something that lays flat below the top rails of a standard Gobi?
Any help would be appreciated.

I can't help, but I can agree with you. Unless I'm missing something, and I might be, $70 for a plastic Jerry can seems a little steep. And I was wondering too about "can" (containers) that would fit at the front of the Gobi, stay flat under the toprail, and maybe hold 5 or 10 gallons each - one for water, one for fuel. With them up high like that, you'd have a great gravity system for topping off fuel - and even a nice shower when out camping!

I'm looking into having some made - and I'll keep you posted if I do!

I don't kow Phil. I ran the truck down to about 2.5 gallons in KS. I was really worried I'd run out and there's NOTHING in KS. Ask Adam about it, I was on the phone with him bitching about it!!!

Thanks guys. Really just wanted to be sure I didn't miss some cool product out there.

And no, i've never been that far off road either. I have however been driving up I5 when the low full chime went off and 20 miles to the next station. Then when your fuel range message just says 'very low' without a gas station for miles. Thats fun and embarrasing to say I've done that twice now.

GOBI sells the Scepter Military Jerry Cans. I have heard from a few sources that they are the best on the market. Also, they will not scratch up your GOBI rack like a metal Jerry Can.

You need to go farther off-road. And since your already sitting on 30 gallons or so, what's another 5 or ten on the roof?

Seriously, I pretty much agree - there are only a few places I would take spare fuel along with me - it's the WATER cans I'm REALLY interested in. I'm mostly out in the desert when I'm off road - and you can never have too much water out there!

So these are the ones we were talking about a few days ago? I could definately see those with rubber matting glued to the side laying flat {or on edge if floor space is important to you) strapped down. Rubber matt preventing scratches to rack and slippage.

A couple of concerns.

1. Venting - I'm guessing they would be OK on a hot day on the roof with no vent?

2. Spillage with them on their sides - the caps would need to be really reliable, especially with the first concern.

hmmmm.

See now Alec, I see Bondages idea. I'm visioning a water can up top fixed with a nozzle from a sun shower. The desert sun warming the water for a evening shower....

It's actually a cool idea.

PLus we need to consider the cool factor for the looks of the cans...LOL
