I'll be going to Kodiak Island on the 21st of Feb. for three weeks of testing. I'll let you know just how bad it really sucks!

DRTYFN 02-10-2006 02:04 PM

That's kind of like saying that Arizona sucks in the summer.

And next week on Champions of the Obvious....

ree 02-10-2006 02:16 PM

Wait, wait, wait. Maybe Mike thinks it sucks because it's dark, not because of the cold. In that case, it isn't like saying Arizona sucks in the summer.

Adam in CO 02-10-2006 02:23 PM

My ex-wife is from North Pole, AK, a suburb of Fairbanks (in AK terms). I went up there once in the Summer, and it was spectacular! The sun never really set. I was light out all the time. Amazing. Then I spent about 5 subsequent Christmases up there. Mind you, Christmas is a few days after the winter solstice. The sortest days of the year. Quite a difference. No sun. Absolutely no direct sun. You could not see it, it never actually rose above the horizon. Dawn and dusk were about a total of 3 or4 hours, combined. -20 was normal, even balmy. The last day I was ever in AK, it dropped to -70. Turns out that's too cold to de-ice a plane. The pilot and a ticketing agent were on the wings with brooms trying to remove the ice. Not kidding, and it was not a small plane. 727 or 737, I believe. Didn't work. Sat on the tarmac for 6 hours. From midnight to 6am or so. That's right. Flights all originate in AK around midnight so that they can to SEA/TAC in the usual morning lower 48 air-commuter hours. It is a crazy, crazy place.

Alaska winters bring the suck!

Boss Hoss 02-10-2006 06:37 PM

My wifey is in Anchorage right now...she says its not too bad at around 20 degrees. I think shes lying and she misearbly cold--remember we live 1 block from the beach in Florida. Ill testify the flights to and fro are terrible.e

HummerNewbie 02-10-2006 06:43 PM

That is the one place I am definitely going at some point. I will make sure it is in the summer though

I know a few people that have done those cruises and loved them. One couple, my grandparents were in their 70s too

Frank2005 02-10-2006 07:42 PM

Not quite the cold temps here as in Alaska, but we are in blizzard watch for Saturday night on Long Island. They say 6-12" of snow with wind gusts over 50mph. This will be the first snow event for the H2. Can't wait!

You married a penguin?

Boss Hoss 02-10-2006 09:45 PM

Its not a place i care to go to...just happen to have family and a new niece out there. Cold and wet both suck--snow is both.

OrangeCrush 02-10-2006 11:47 PM

Cold weather is much like the hot weather we have in the south in the sense that your body becomes acclumated.

I grew up in Grand Prairie, Alberta. I can remember walking to school at 25 and 30 below zero. The schools didn't close until -35 and that wasn't including wind chill factor.

As I eventually moved to the States and further South, I couldn't stand how hot it was. Again, it took a while to become acclumated to the temps.

So I believe your wife when she says she doesn't feel it. Either that or she's completely numb from the cold...lol.
