to make a really long story short, I bought a 6 pack of mobil-1 marked on the outside as 5W-30 and after I put the second quart in I noticed they are all 15W-50's.
What should I do? drain it? |

I would drain it, and take it all back, box, empties, oil filter (if it has any in it), etc. back and swap it out.
|
I would leave it in. It's only going to be in there a few thousand miles. It's not like it's permanent. It's a little thicker than what you would normally use, but it's summer so you won't have any cold engine cranking issues. Some people are so anal about their oil.
These trucks have great engines. As long as you keep something slippery in the crankcase and change it every equinox or so, you won't have any trouble from it. |
I wrote a nasty gram to Mobil. I was only bummed because the box was sealed, and honestly I do not know how that could have happened. We will see what happens, I have used (and will continue to use) Mobil for years.
This morning I went down and bought another filter and a 6-Pack of 5W-30, and this time i opened it on the floor. People were looking at me like I was crazy. I have not even driven the H2 yet...but you guys think it might be ok to put at least a few miles on? I am just paranoid! |
J, drive the crap out of it...you got nothing to worry about.
|
You're probably right Pete.

I've heare it said that it's a good idea to leave ordinary mineral oil in the car the first 500 to 1,000 miles for a proper break in. Then switch to synthetic.
I doubt either approach would matter much though. George SSSS |

You’re right. It is my fault, I must be purged! I have done my own work on cars/trucks for years..I guess I just had other things on my mind besides re-reading quarts out of the box.
Besides the customer is always right! ![]() |
Well...VTSTOMPER
Are you sure the box said 5W-30 or by chance are you "dyslexlick". ![]() If you only put in 2 quarts...then no don't drive it. ![]() But otherwise you're very much OK...change it out in 3K. Ric |
I will take a pic for you tonight!
![]() Bottom line I should have noticed it before I poured one qt into the block. I did fill it with all 6 - so I am good. I have not got an email back from Mobil yet though! |
Well, I will be taking it out very soon...the climate here will not continue to be hot for long anyway.

Phil:
Changing Oil every 3K is crazy with today's engine--I fully believe the dealers, etc. put that stupid sticker on there to get you back to their shop so they can find other things wrong when changing oil--and then talk you into a fix of some sort. I should know, two of my best friends are in the auto repair biz. |
