Free Speech...I used it too. I* sent them an email last week and guess what? I just got one back from them. Here are both of those.

How can you stand in judgement of a man who did what he was asked by the US Government in a time of war? This man, Pappy Boyington, is a hero who happened to go to your school. If you think that you have already erected too many monuments to white men then maybe you are not getting it at all. Whomever they are, you should be proud that they went to UW and was honorable enough to get the Navy Cross. Your judegement of a brave man makes me sick, just how many of the students at your limp wristed campus would have the balls to stand up and fight in honor of this country in these times?
"A Marine is not the type of person we want to produce at UW"?????? What the hell does that mean? I think that you should look at your alumni and see how many of them served in any branch and how many parents of students served before you condemn all Marines or service men and women. My nephew wanted me to take him to your campus this summer so he can see it...he really thought he wanted to go there. I am emailing him this story to his platoon right now. I doubt he will want to go to school in Washinton at all now with his GI Bill money. This kid is now going to have to find somewhere he is welcomed and not disrespected like he would be by your student orgainization who just spit in the face of all Americans.

They actually sent me a response today....<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">Mr. We spelled your name wrong,
Thanks for your email, you obviously care about this country and respecting combat veterans and the sacrifices that have been made. For these reason I co-sponsored the original resolution. As student body president that should indicate what the student community at large feels.
In examining what happened at the Senate meeting I would caution you on reading the minutes, they are paraphrased and have a number of errors. Further, many articles, posts, and reports are highlighting quotes that do not necessarily reflect what went on at the meeting. The rationale behind this resolution losing by one vote are a bit more profound.
On Jill Edwards comments. They were her own, and afterward there has not only been a response from the outside community but even at the meeting itself, there were many who responded outright or were on the speakers list wishing to. (Side comments or a crowd uproar aren't recorded) In the days following, she said she realizes the impact of how she worded her stance, and I think I speak for her when I say she is sorry for any insult felt from her choice of words. I continue to defend the right for her to say anything that she believes, as I am sure most do.
In the end, after talking with a number of senators I have found that many of them were concerned that it was just Colonel Boyington and wanted other veterans to be included. You'll find these statements in the minutes but they have not been the focus. It was discovered after more research by the sponsor that 4 others were awarded Medal of Honor besides Boyington. That idea, that there were others clearly worthy of a memorial, resonated more than the others did in my opinion. That has been the most consistent argument I have heard. For this reasons, the sponsor, myself, and others, are very confident that a new resolution will be able to pass that is inclusive of the other 4. It is being drafted right now and should be introduced shortly.
I would be glad to answer any more questions, after all the buck stops here. With that I apologize for any disrespect taken, again I am confident it failed for lack of inclusion of other worthy recipients. I would also welcome them from your nephew. In debate, much is said, but in the exchange I believe that a lot is learned and the right conclusions are made. I think honoring all 5 will be the best one.
Sincerely,
Lee Dunbar

PS: Unrelated, I am an International Studies major and have many classes as a result with veterans with the GI Bill. I could forward any questions about UW, classes, etc. to those students if you want.

I stil theink they suck and would not recommend that school but at least they did respond even if it was limp wristed and propbably written after they got a good laugh.
Freedom of speech is fine, I use it all the time. But it the the speaker who represent a group who needs to be careful,. If they believe their own crap then we are in trouble. Remember tomorrows leaders are today youth.
