Ford and Chrysler have actual switches to turn the OD off.
In GM vehicles, on the shifter you have the positions "1", "2", "D", and "D" surrounded by a square.
"D" is 3rd gear. D in the square is 4th gear, which is OD.
So to lock it out of overdrive, leave it in "D".
