I did the same thing. Pulled the rubber out and that way you have the full strip when you remove the rack. I ended up using my old Thule 725 with a special kit to fit the H3 crossrail. It was much cheaper

The H3 Ski Racks are actually made by Thule with Hummer Logo. The only difference was that they have special mounting bolts for the cross rail. Where the Thule models do not have this kit.
