Just changed mine today (see my other post about the heater hoses).
This was the second time I changed my oil. I still made a mess, but less than last time.
I don't remove the skid plate. What I do to keep the oil from running everywhere is to get a sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil, and shape it to flow the oil where it will not contact the bars. Kind of like a special shaped funnel.
The oil filter is aggravating to get to. I use a filter socket that slips on the end of the filter, and has a square hole in it to use a 3/8" socket. The filter is right next to the oil pan on the driver’s side. It will be full of oil, and will make a mess.
Also, if you run the engine to get the oil warm before you change it, beware of the catalytic converter. I have a nice red spot on my left arm from contacting it while removing the filter.
BTW, I use a Mobil 1 filter, M1-107, and Mobil 1 5w-30 oil.
