You may as well forget buying a second vehicle for saving gas, especially a new vehicle. It's easy to for get that it took energy (the production of which expended probably more hydrocarbons and CO2 than the vehicle will in its lifetime) to build the second vehicle. Buying a second vehicle defeats the purpose of energy conservation/reducing emissions.
Hard facts to get around, everything takes energy and (most) energy production takes fuel. Yes there is wind,wave, and solar, but again there is the energy cost of making the components and fielding them and the energy produced hasn't come close to fossil fuel. Doesn't mean we should give up, but it's still a long road. Same story for ethanol and the hydrogen economy...
