I junked the OnStar and wired in the Escalade's external CD player in its place. I can now play CDs while the NAV is active.
In the picture, notice "CDX D1 T23" is displayed on the NAV screen. The changer is controlled by the NAV unit and the steering wheel controls, and it works perfectly.
