GM execs took some big pay cuts, and I will agree they appear to be overpaid. However, the brain trust to run a large organization such as GM/Ford, etc., is very competitive.
There were a lot of mistakes made at the executive/engineering level by the auto manufacturers; I agree.
As for the imports, they are not stuck with the legacy costs of the US manufactures living off of union contracts, and the governments of the other countries playing with their money rates.
The UAW is one of the loudest to scream, yet I can remember back when the electronics industry went down due to the UAW members (and all other Americans) purchasing imported TVs at a better cost.
