Explain what happened to the dealership and ask for new ones. I had the same one happened and they provided me with the covers. Despite the chiding of several members, I still think the switch design and placement is flawed and should be corrected in some manner. The lights should be wired so they are electrified only during vehicle operation and a larger warning light that the lights are on (perhaps in the gauge cluster) would be a good idea as well.
You certainly are not an idiot for this incident. I have wired aftermarket lights to two of my other vehicles and had the above specifications built into it both times. And the toggle switch lights are/were very bright, leaving no question as to whether they were off or on. A GM designer would do well to note this problem and correct it.
