Corn production is already increasing to meet the demand of ethanol plants, the problem is that the type of sweet corn with the best sugar content for fermentation usually requires irrigation and just about every aquifer in the country is already threatened.
Not to mention the impact of increased competition on the food supply as more ethanol plants come online. We're already seeing increases in the price of milk related to rising feed cost. Next up will be soft drinks and just about everything else using corn syrup.
Sugar beets are a much better source but the subsidy money isn't there for those so everyone is planting corn.
I keep telling everyone flex fueled gas/electric turbines are the way to go but once the political machine makes up it's mind, that's it.
