I put some cheapo projectors in a VW last year and the light pattern was V shaped, basically not lighting up the road ahead but the sides of the road. Another time I put some in a stock reflector housing and it threw the light into the sky, not to mention blinding everyone.

Yes, luckily, there is a horizontal cut-off or people would definately be blinded!
