I lived in the mountains of NC for almost two months, surviving with nothing but he crap on my backn and hiked a couple of 14K peaks, along with a looong host of other experiences in the back country.
I dealt with bears in my camp on a nightly basis, with no shoes or pants to put on at night, let alone bear spray, or god forbid a gun. I dont know that I could have gotten my shoes on before a real confrontation with a bear, but it would have given me a hell of a better chance of getting through and encounter then not having them.
I cant hold any ill will against someone that is able to live off the land 100%, but I came damn close, in my eyes surviveorman is too dramatic. Bear has free-climbed down cliffs that survivorman would not climb down in a wet dream, and he never bitched once.
