They are given free ski passes in exchange for basically being babysitters, watching for injured skiers, etc. When they seen trouble, they call in the real help. Who was the bet with, and where do you collect. Unless things have changed since the 2005-2006 season, he's a volunteer ski patrol that's required to work something like 10-15 days each season.
