I just fixed my rear hatch lock today, mine went out as well.

you'll have to peel back the trim far enough to reach in or use some kind of hard stick that can slide the lever to the opposite direction in order to get the lock to open. The lever slides left/right, pushing it in one direction will lock it while the other direction unlocks it. You are correct the push pins are on the bottom and you will need a special too to get underneath it to pull it up evenly. I have that tool if you need to borrow one. But the big trick is getting enough room from the trim without cracking it to access the locking part that in the center of the hatch/door.
