I'm a long way off from beeing a "gearhead", but my opinion is that a dmax would be as slow if not slower on the road, but as stated, would be unstopable off road. I agree Steve, i don't want anything slower. With the weight of the truck, the I-5 decision was just plain weak. gets you where you want to go, but not very efficiantly. I don't like any of the six's gm has to offer so the vortec 8 gets my vote. There was never a lack of power when needed in previous trucks and an avalanche. I would even argue that an 8 would be more efficient than an I-5 in that it wouldn't have to work as hard to get your H3 from point a to b. does that make any sense? my $0.02.
