Are you talking about the tube steps, or the removeable steps?
The tubes would be sanded, a bonding agent applied, then the Line-X. With the bonding agent you get a Lifetime Warranty... maybe.
If you're talking about the removeable steps, then you're looking at more money. Since they're aluminum, the steps have to be sand blasted free of the PC, the bonding agent applied, then the Line-X.
I have the removeable steps and looked into coating them, but changed my mind after hearing the process. Rattle can will work just fine and it's easy to touch-up.
If you have the tubes, you can also sand them and use the rattle can method.
