Even if all that didn't happen, eventually, if you drive, you
must buy gas. Thus, all the gas that was not sold on May 15 would be sold either soon before or soon after May 15. The only way to affect the supply/demand curve is for millions of people to use less gas over a long period of time. That means millions of people either driving a small deathtrap or driving fewer miles. I don't think that will significantly happen until it gets closer to $4/gal. A lot of people who try to do this will probably find mass transit increasingly overcrowded and the associated rates rising for that as well. Thus, they will probably just buy less other stuff and keep buying gas.
