Serious answer: We never really know if we're gonna make it home
So, with all the spare parts, food, clothes, gas, water, spare tire (anything more than an inch over stock won't fit inside), recovery gear, Spam and Grey Poupon, something has to go on the roof rack. So, we may as well just put everything up there and leave room inside for sleeping while the tow truck arrives
