How badly does GM Coolant Stain Carpeting?
Had to take the H3 to the dealer yesterday after a slight smell of coolant inside the cabin turned into a mist of yuck through the vents. The mornings here have been cool enough for a little heat, so I turned fan to 1, and within 10-15 seconds the entire cabin, windshield, and front windows were fogged. Service manager called today to let me know that the entire back of the heater core was cracked. At 4400 miles, this is their first chance to provide great customer service. I am kinda concerned about the huge puddle it left under my mats. Cashmere carpeting does not look good with that coolant color. Has anyone else had this issue? Service guy said it was the first that he had seen on the H3.

No, but that sucks. Even if there's no stain now, I would think it would be more suseptible to stains later especially if whatever they use to clean it takes any scotchguard or other protectant out of the carpet. Keep us informed. Good luck

Re: How badly does GM Coolant Stain Carpeting?
Not sure how the coolant stains, or if it even stains. What surprised me is the cracked heater core. We were just discussing this at work the other day, making comments about what a pain the arse it is to replace a heater core on most modern vehicles (remove entire dash on most vehicles), and one guy pulls up warranty stats and heater cores were not even on the list.
From what you describe, it appears a bad one slipped through the manufacturer's quality control. If it did stain, the dealer should replace the carpeting, if it didn't stain, no stain will appear later. As for scotchguard, don't believe scotchguard is applied to the carpeting.

Re: How badly does GM Coolant Stain Carpeting?
The stain part was kinda sarcastic. I haven't looked through the warranty yet, but I'm thinkin it better be covered. My Volvo has almost a quarter million miles on the original core! This must have been a defective piece from the plant. We shall see how the dealer handles it. They had it all day Friday, and the service mgr called to let me know that it would be put back together by late afternoon, but wanted to detail the inside. Will update when I get it back.

Just got back from the dealership...and I have to say that they did an excellent job taking care of the mechanical issue and satisfying me as a customer. All of the replacement was covered. The total was just under 1k, so don't look forward to doing that outside of warranty. The interior was completely detailed including the carpet and inside the vents as well. It smells better now!
