Got this from the gmsidenews web site. Supposedly Bob works as an engineer on the H3:
Yesterday while at work I was sweeping the floor and this beautiful BLACK H3 pulls in (5th one I've seen). The guy gets out.......
Lets call him "Bob"
Me "Wow, great looking H3, they just started production a couple weeks ago"
Bob "That's true, I work for GM, we've been making about 300 a week (maybe he said day)"
Me "How does it drive"
Bob "Well, it drives like a truck (laughs), not smooth like a car"
Me " (laughs) I bet. Does the I5 have enough power for it?"
Bob "My son says it's a pig, but I think it's ok. But if you're in a hurry or someone is riding your ass, this isn't the engine (laughs)"
Me "It's a shame the I6 wouldn't fit"
Bob "Yeah, that would have been much better"
Me "Well, the TURBO I5 should solve that"
After I said that, he was sending out a vibe that I caught. As soon as I said "Turbo I5", he seemed surprised and puzzled that I knew about it.
Bob "Yeah, it should solve the power problem (winks at me)"
I know this isn't anything exciting to hear, but I thought I'd let you guys in on my experience. There have been rumors about the TURBO I5 being scrapped in favor of a V8. Maybe my encounter will make you guys think twice.
The H3 he was driving was black with the ebony interior and red piping on the seats. My boss doesn't exactly like it when I bother customers too much, so I really couldn't ask to sit in it.
The whole time the guy was in a BIG hurry. As soon as I started talking about the engine he seemed to quicken his pace to get out of the store.
Maybe I'm crazy, but something was going on when I mentioned the TURBO I5.
The last thing he said to me was......"You really know your stuff young man."

why would they turbo the h3 instead of a supercharger? i can just see some crawling activity going horribly wrong when the turbo spools up... i dunno but i think in this application a SC would be best

Probably the same school of thought that put the turbocharger in the H1 a few years back...And the turbo was in the H3T concept, and the H3 took a lot of design cues from that vehicle...we'll see I guess.

Actually the H3 was done first, just not shown to the pubic. The H3t was done as a teaser to start some media buzz about the H3 and get every one guessing if the H3 was going to be a pick-up or SUV.

This is true. I had been involved with this project for a while and the H3 had been in the works sence 1999. The media was trying to get info on the H3 so they came out with the H3T to take the heat and media off the H3 project. As far as the turbo, that was the plan. But the plan has changed. No turbo 5. Probably a couple of years down the road, maybe Alpha version with a different option. Now the South African version will have the I5 also but will have an optional Isuzu turbo desiel engine. They will not build a right hand drive version until 2007. I have not heard of the turbo desiel for the USA, yet.

Do you think a V6 will find it's way under the hood?

i doubt it either. with mpg issues, a v6 would eliminate that crowd that they're appealing to. i don't know if it'll be really worth it to have two different models with two different engines.

I wonder if a turbo will deliver the low end tourque, and will it need preimum fuel being it raises the compression ratio.

how about the Vortec 4200 I6 with dual inline turbos...Motor Trend printed GM Powertrain had huge success in experimenting with this configuration

If I am reading you correctly Builder, you are trying to get us to all understand that there will be nothing bigger than the I5
As much as we hope and ask, it's not going to happen

The Alpha probably will be out 2008 model and it will have a engine bigger than the I5 and it won't be any kind of 6 either.

There are people working on a supercharger for it. Do a search of the H3 forum and you will find some threads.
