Has it been done?
I want to connect my own cell phone
to the audio system in my H3.
You know, so that speaker audio and
the OnStar microphone is used with
my own cell phone, by plugging into
the headphone connection of my phone.

That would be great, thanks for all info.

If you have verizon you just call them and add onstar to your plan for $10 a month. They assign your vehicle a new phone number and when you're in your car you dial *720+number to forward all your calls to that number. Pretty easy. I use it everyday since I have a manual and it works really well. If you have a different carrier I have no idea if you can connect into the mic and speakers. If you really want it I think it would be easier to just get verizon.

The verizon opition is great. I too use it everyday. It's a whole lot cheaper than buying cell time from Onstar and you can forward calls to the Hummer whenever you need to.

Since I already had a verizon plan, this only runs me an additional $10 a month. It's a good service.

Sounds good on the Verizon sharing option,
maybe I'll have to just use that.
I like how Verizon is deploying EV-DO
fast Internet service too.

At the CES show last week, Google founder
Larry Page talked about having Google Earth
as the navigation system in cars, and he had
the autonomous DARPA Grand Challenge winning car
(a VW Touareg) on stage with him. Maybe a
built-in car cell phone like our OnStar phones
could be used to give things like Google Earth
the connection they need to the rest of the
Internet, running on a tablet PC. Anyway...

I thought of one problem with the Verizon
sharing solution -- Outgoing calls placed
from the Hummer would result in the Hummer's
number being seen on Caller ID displays,
so people might try to call back to the
Hummer number rather than your main cell phone
number, right? Maybe this isn't a big deal.

When you 1st get the Hummer, Onstar gives you a phone number for the rig. If you sign up with Verizon, Verizon changes that and issues you a new number. And yes that number does show up on caller ID (unless it is blocked by you).

Under most verizon plans all time is shared between all your phones, and you can forward calls between numbers. So you can easily forward calls from your handset to the Hummer when you are on the road, and then forward Hummer calls back to the handset thereafter.

You press the phone activation button on the
rear view mirror, then a nice lady voice
accepts commands such as "digit dial",
"digit store" and "call". Pretty useable
voice recognition system. I guess the
microphone is on the ceiling above the driver.

OK on the different number assignment from
Verizon, DarthKarl, and that makes sense
that we can use forwarding in both directions
if we really want.

hey gc2488,
on the navigation, I decided to wait for the mac mini w/ a xenarc touchscreen instead, hook up a nav system through it or use a bluetooth phone to share internet access with it (verizon unlimited internet on treo is $50/mo) and use mapquest, expedia whatever you want.

Tomorrow apple is expected to announce mac mini with intel processors so you can run windows (if you really have to) and mac os x on it. just another alternative. And it has Front Row, nothing google is going to come out with will be cooler. A computer with touchscreen and internet access at your fingertips in your car anywhere. I really hate google right now though.

Hey trading13, excellent idea,
I knew about the expected new Mac Mini
announcement tomorrow during the talk by
Steve Jobs -- They usually have good coverage
at http://www.macnn.com/ for one site,
besides http://www.apple.com of course.

Thanks for the link to Mac Mini installs in vehicles!
Please do post info and pictures if you go ahead
with such an installation in your H3.

I was thinking of using a Mac Mini with projector
inside my house, but I think it might just be
good idea in vehicles like our H3s too.
Too bad the Verizon cell phones in our Hummers
don't provide Verizon's EV-DO Broadband Access
for megabit Internet access rates. Maybe in the H4 it will,
or we could just add a phone of our own for that
fast Internet access. I like how Google is talking about
having Google Earth in vehicles. That would certainly
require good fast mobile Internet access.

I've seen that last Mac Mini vehicle in person -- I was at
the DARPA Grand Challenge race of autonomous vehicles
that took place last October in Nevada. Pretty fun.

yeah I really wish it were possible to add an aircard to a minimac. I have it on my powerbook and i could use bluetooth to share the broadband connection between the two while driving but then I have to always take my laptop with me. kinda defeats the purpose.

anyway heres a forum from people who are using google earth in their cars, its a pretty long discussion but with good pics on page 5. one guy said internet speed doesn't effect it much and some are saying you dont need it all if you just scroll to the areas you are drivn while you do have internet it will cache it, I'm not so sure about that and I didn't read most of it but it mmight give you some ideas.

oh yeah I really like the minimac home theater idea too, i was looking at the tv tuners for them today. Too bad I sold google short last month, that stock really has to come down.
