I found a way to make good use of the right side rear storage compartment.



Mounted in here is a Cobra HH38 WX ST hand held 40 channel CB radio with 10 weather bands, DC power cord for the CB, 2 motoraolla FRS radios, a Magellan 315 hand held GPS and a 48 pack of AA batteries to run everything.

Actually that is permanent. It is made out of 3-1 inch thick sheets of plastic type foam, not styrofoam. It is almost impossible to rip and it doesn't shed like styrofoam. It has an adhesive back so I cut three sheets to size and stuck them together. When I cut the outer dimensions, I cut it "fat" and pushed it into place. You would be hard pressed to pull it out. I then traced the bases of the 4 units on to the top where I wanted them and then cut down into it 2 layers so there is still a layer on the bottom. I cut the cut-outs tight so you have to push the units in. They don't move at all, very snug fit. And I haven't heard a peep out of any of them yet!

This stuff is very "grippy" and very dense. It is the newer stuff that they pack around electronic devises. I've seen it used in as packing around computers, printers and most recently around a sub amp that I bought my son for Christmas. It is very durable, however easy to cut with a sharp knife. I've seen this same stuff come in different colors, so the stuff you talking about may be the same thing. Also as I said earlier I cut the outer dimensions "fat" and when I pushed it down into the well it locked itself in.

Here is another shot with the batteries and compressor hose out of the way. Also notice the cut is tapered in to conform to the shape of the well. I did this by sticking all three sheets together first and then cutting through all 3 layers to make it fit. I only made it so it took up one half of the well, this way I still had room for the air hose and the 48 pack of batteries. You can however make it to fill the entire well if you have that many devices to secure.

Actually there is a foam distributer/manufacturer nearby. I stopped in one day and told the guy what I wanted to do and he suggested this stuff. Check your local yellow pages for foam distributors, if you can't find one nearby I can get you the phone number. They are located in NJ.

Probably my one significant complaint about the H2 is lack of utility space. For example in front I don't have enough spaces and slots to put all the things I need on a road trip...maps, coffee cups, water, GPS, camera, sunglasses, CDs, phone, etc. Glove and center compartments are too small and there aren't enough slots in the doors to hold stuff. I find myself always reaching for the floor behind me, which is where I dump everything and it slides around and gets mixed up as I drive.

Spike you should go into business making H2 storage solutions.

I have to agree with you on that. There are not enough storage compartments or storage areas in this vehicle. I am currently toying aroung with the idea of doing something in the back along the lines of what Adam in CO did. Possibly a lighter guage material with hinged lid so you can still store larger items back there.

To address Zazing, I bet some of this would work great in the doors. You could secure the smaller accessories up there were you need them.

I I stated earlier up in the post, this stuff is very durable and yet easy to cut and work with. You just have to make sure you have a large, very sharp knife. It makes for real clean cuts. You could cut this stuff to fit anywhere. I used a non serated kitchen knife with a 7 inch blade that I sharpened razor sharp before cutting and a metal straight edge to guide my cuts.

Spike, I love a cheep easy fix. That looks like an easy way to end clutter and stop stuff from sliding around. BTW, I dont think its stupid but it did make me look!

Great idea. As an extra, take the time to pull the tray insert OUT of the wheel well. You can do it on the right and left sides. Lift hard on the outer edges and it will pop out (be carful with the right side as there is a wire to the power port). There is a LOT of storage inside for jumper cables, tools, gloves, tow straps, tire pump hose (you get the idea). I put a lot of rarely used but need to have items in here. It's all out of site and secure. Stuff some fiberglass insulation down the front and back edges so you wont loose small stuff.

Thats good use of the storage tray. I used mine for my rechargeable flashlight. I took the power from the 12V plug. People always ask if thats a Hummer accessory

Nice hummer Light, although a bit big.. I keep a rechargeable Surefire light. It is brighter then the hummer light and about a 10th the size.. Leaves more room for more stuff.
Keep the balance of emergency equipment in med. size Pelican case. Wonder is anyone makes a replacement cover for the area behind where the spare used to be

It does take up some room, but the battery lasts a long time. (Not as long as an LED light ) I used this light because it was free and fire department issued.

Free is an excellant price... I love the new Led lights.. Surefire has come out with a number of New LED flashlights.. Do not know if you are into firearms.. But they are coming out with a new tactical light for the GLock and simular(sp) rails. Smaller then the M3 but twice the price. WIth the new 5th generation LED's coming on the market should be fun.
