Driving a long last night and passing a construction zone near my house when I spotted this Jeep Grand Cherokee with its ass end up on a ledge drop from a road that was being built (probably a 12" drop from ledge to sand below).

I don't really know what the guy was thinking or why as I just seen the aftermath. But I do know he screwed that Jeep up majorly, so of course I had to do the honorable thing and take a few pictures. Anytime someone is this stupid someone has to document it

Notice the tailpipe jammed up on the ledge

Another stupid driver making a capable vehicle look bad .

Why would you not hit that at an angle . Why would you not lock the transfer case and pull out with the front end? Maybe it was alot worse than the picture made it out to be. 12 inches? Come on you could do that in a Libby .

Thats the sad thing, the drop wasnt bad at all. I was being quite liberal by saying it was a 12" drop. From the looks of it he hit it pretty fast and just splatted it. No excuse for stupidity in the world

Hmm...classic urban idiot.

The sad part is that if the driver was going at a slightly faster clip, the rear end damage (what there is of it) would be less to nonexistent.

And the truck could get out of that little rut quite easily. My sister-in-law's Jeep GC could do it, and it's stock. So the person either broke something, didn't know what to do, or was so drunk that they basically left it there.

They may also have just freaked when the felt the rear end hit and decided to leave it for someone more experienced. I'm generally not into brand bashing. I think people should get whatever they like.

That being said, a few years ago, I was driving straight ahead in my Tahoe (steal bumper) when a Grand Cherokee Limited Edition Laredo something or other (the one that looks like a wagon, rather than a Jeep) decided to turn left in front of me. He turned into a convenience store driveway; apparently he was having a 7-11 emergency and needed his smokes in a real hurry. Needless to say, he was deemed to be at fault.

Anyway, our front bumpers smacked. Mine was bent, but not too badly. His front bumper and grille had completely disintegrated. Having an inquisitive streak, I started reassembling small pieces of forensic evidence. His bumper was made of Styrofoam (yes, STYROFOAM) wrapped in some plastic microskin (similar to what they wrap around bicycle helmets). Anyway, his front grille, radiator and g-d knows what all else were trashed. I just don't know what some manufacturers are thinking.

Don't tell anyone, but I must admit, I would consider one of those stickers.

I think the name of the game is energy absorption.

I have a 1951 willys that is solid steel. It might do O.K. for it's self in an accident but I think my body might just make up the difference. I would prefer the vehicle crumple and absorb than my grill .

Energy absorption and the fact that I bet it is cheap for them to build them that way.

There are a few running around. Contact Ben Evans at ben@slantback.com. He's probably got one or two left over.
