I thought that I would toss up a post for people to put any information they have on winch options for our truck. I have seen the Steelcraft and SMA winch designs and have concerns about both. The SMA one is only 8000 lbs, but is internal, the Steelcraft mount is external and can have anything mounted to it. Now we run ito approach angle issues. I thought that the external one would not pose a problem until I was out this weekend. I was hitting the tow hooks into things. If there were a winch on there, we willrin into problems.

Here is the Steelcraft side view pic.

This is it from the bottom

This is the SMA one available this month. It needs a roller fairlead and probably needs a snatchblock to make it functional.

Let us know what you all think of these.

The Tough Country lifted H3 has a winch, looks like a steel plate bolted to the front bumper. Any one else now how this one is mounted?

Realize that the H3 wieghs more than a TJ, but I'll definitly take the SMA unit and use a snatchblock to double the line pull to 16k. That'll be more than enough to get it out of most stucks.

I'm probably going to make a receiver mount plate for a winch and bolt in on using the tow hook bolts. Winches on the front are GREAT when you're helping someone else, sometimes though, the problem requires getting my own arse out of the woods. I slid down a muddy steep trail once in my old Jeepster. Wouldn'cha know it, I ended up front bumper/winch down against a big log. Oh, I had a winch alright, lot of good it did me. It took hours of jacking, moving, filling, cussin', blood, sweat and tears but I got it out. I've still got my bag of tricks prompted by that escapade, TWO snatch blocks, every hi-lift accessory available, and the desire for a receiver mounted winch.

The garage shelf's a great place for the winch when I'm not offroad. It stays new, uncorroded, clean, and ready to use. Yeah, they look silly sticking out there, but they work.

My TJ is 4900 pounds, and you will not have a problem with a 8000 pound winch pulling a 4700 pound H3. Just remember the more wire rope you have off the spool, the more pulling power you have.
