Save Saranac Lake, NY from....
Wal-mart! It must be done folks! Stop the giant retailer from crushing another innocent town with it's heavyhanded tactics and low pricing. It will destroy the town for certain!

Yeah, I used to live there. You know what? I got pretty tired to paying resort prices for crap. I would have been very happy for a nicely designed, reasonably sized, hidden Wal-Mart store where I could buy food and still afford to pay my extremely high heating bills! I used to drive to the Wal-Mart 45 minutes away every 3 weeks to buy my food in large quantities because it was so much cheaper. I feel bad for the poor people up there. Over $3 for a gallon of milk, all healthy fresh foods so much more expensive than processed crap. Eh, stoopid hippies.
What do you think?
Also, they have the ability to make these kinds of stores look decent. Here's a Target in Silverthorne, Colorado:

That's a great looking Tar-jhay! The one closest to us is one of those pink/lavender/lime green/purple colored ones... and that was AFTER all of their renovations!

WalMart would be a great addition to that town and it would benefit the local economy by leaps and bounds. The City Council needs to address Big Box issues ASAP.
I'm sure a Conditional Use Permit will be required and that's where the town has power to exercise some design control. They just need to step up and do it.
BTw, where's the next closest town with a WalMart? Or even better, Where's the next closest town that would like to have a Wal Mart?
There are many instances where WalMart just abandoned thoughts of entering one town because of opposition and went to the next town. I don't need to tell you what happened to the first town, but I will... MILLIONS in lost revenue and nothing but a shell of a town left.

Lake Placid is the next closest to Saranac Lake that is sizeable. It refused the store a long time ago. SL is doomed in my opinion. It will soon be too expensive for the people who work in the resort industry to afford, and it will lose it's needed services and disappear.

Ya, extremely well said Ken.
The Walmart here is a huge force in the local economy. It's well run, well stocked, clean (pleasant to go to), open 24 hours a day, and offers people enough price and selection incentive to drive from miles away. In fact, people drive from an hour away (or more) to get to the nearest big "city" just to go to stock up at Walmart.
Why? Because their local stores don't offer reasonable hours, selection, or prices. Those local stores would rather complain than entice. And the towns that are homes to those local stores are losing out big time.
This is the way it is. Walmart isn't big, ruthless, and mean. It's actually trying to serve people and make every day items affordable to those who can't afford much. People are upset with them because it does so in a big and ruthless way and they're not getting their cut. But they don't see the benefits Walmart offers.
