A moment of silence for Hurricane Katrina

Although currently residing in Pittsburgh for the last 3 years, I was a lifelong resident of Louisiana and for 7 years prior to moving to Pittsburgh, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana.

As most of you know, today is the 1 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina striking the Gulf Coast and New Orleans.

I would be remiss, with my connection to the state of Louisiana, the city of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, if I did not pay a moment of respect to those that suffered so dearly on this date a year ago and the days thereafter. I would also like to thank EVERYONE who donated their time, effort and money to the relief efforts.

God Bless New Orleans, God Bless the Gulf Coast and God Bless America.

pay a moment of "respect"/pay a moment of "silence", just pause for a moment and remember what happened and say a prayer for those that have suffered or who are still suffering from events associated with the hurricane.

We were running like a scared little b!tch when the first 150 foot pine fell in our yard. I had a 8 week old baby and had we not left our neighborhood when we did we would not of been able to get out. And we are 2 hours away from the coast and the "big" winds still had not gotten here and we had trees falling everywhere. I just can't imagine being on the coast when it was so bad here. After it was all over the central mississippi area looked like a war zone.

Glad to hear you made it out safely back then.

Yeah, it was wild on the coast - my parents live in Orange Beach, Alabama, right next to Gulf Shores and just south of Mobile. Mobile didn't get the damage that LA and MS got, but got some pretty harsh flooding. Thank God the Alabama Coast faired okay.

Of course, Hurricane Ivan basically took them out the year before.

Say a prayer??? Did prayers help avert disaster when it was needed? PUH-LEEZ!!!!by superstitions.

i agree with the thought behind this, but why is the goverment responsible for any of this. my dog got run over by a car, but i didn't call the goverment to get me a knew one. my daughters car got totaled by a drunk driver, but the goverment did not pay for a new one. my neighbors house got hit by lightning and burned, but the goverment did not send anyone to pick him up or give them money. what makes any of this the goverments responsibility???

The government is responsible for after the fact. There was total infrastructure destruction. Systems that took decades to build were wiped out.

Sorry, but you just don't seem to get it. It might be a case of out of sight, out of mind. But entire towns and cities were wiped away on the Gulf Coast that had endured hurricanes before. I am 150 miles from the coast and would have never expected to experience hurricane force winds this far inland, but we did. The 150 miles between here and the coast sustained tremendous damage.

There are many people who were just getting by that lost what they had and have no other means to get back on their feet. There are tons of small businesses that were just getting by that employed those people just getting by that can't open back up because all of their physical plant, machinery and inventory was wiped clean. Insurance simply does not make something at this level whole.

Yeah its called buy insurance and evacuate when told too, not wait around to loot.

we all have choices, live on the coast below sea level where hurricanes are prone to oocur, its a choice. roll the dice take your chances accept your fate, but dont blame evryone else or expect someone else to "owe" you for your choice.
