Difference between 4High and 4High Lock
New H3 owner. I know this is probably a dumb question. If the H3 is full time all wheel drive, what is the difference between 4 High and 4 High Lock? I have a base model without the locking diff.
I also used 4 Low Lock the other day. The trans was pretty darn loud. Is that normal?

Re: Difference between 4High and 4High Lock
Anytime you want to do more than 25MPH, 4 hi lock. Under 25 MPH, 4 lo lock.
4 lo lock in 1st or 2nd gear. Very noisy.....normal.

Re: Difference between 4High and 4High Lock
Thank you for the reply. What about the difference between regular 4 High and 4 High Lock? Again I have a base model w/o the locking diff.

4 High Open - provides a constant 40%/60% front/rear torque split
4 High Lock - allows a 50%/50% split front/rear for more slippery surfaces

Cool, you'll have to come out wheeling with us sometime. There's a bunch of us in NorCal (and a couple SoCal folks we let tag along ). I've been wanting to hit some of the trails around the Shaver Lake area.

4-Lo Lock is also used for pulling Jeeps out of deep rivers, quicksand, etc.

Thanks again for all the welcome. I would love to try out some trails near Shaver Lake sometime!
I don't want to be the kind of guy that never uses his Hummer for what it was intended to do... go anywhere!

Technically, there is no torque split when locked, because it is no longer a differential. For example, if the front encounters a slippery surface, torque will be transmitted to the rear up to 100%, and vice versa.
