Ummm I would never say anything bad about anyone else's product without very careful research....
But to make a long story very short... We have a plant in China where we MAKE HID lights on contract for OEM's (car companies)... so I will go out on a limb and give a semi-technical opinion here...
If it is a real HID lamp... There will be a harness and a ballast.
HIDs use an ARC to make light... this REQUIRES a ballast to step up the voltage. It's that simple.
Anything else is a "hopped up" bulb and not true HID. To be fair many of these bulbs are damn good... but they all pale in comparison to a true HID setup.
I have repeatedly asked our engineers to make me a "single housing" solution in real HID and they tell me it can't be done because of heat and space... there will be a separate ballast.
If you want an easy solution, there are several re-sellers on ebay that sell HID kits that include a bulb that attaches in place of the factory bulb, a ballast you can glue/velcro/ screw in place, and a plug the directly plugs into your existing bulb plug. In short no cutting, easily removable. And real HID.
Dig around in Ebay... there are at least 6 guys selling "no cut" HID conversion kits. Most of these kits are pretty good.
Me, I opted for the simple "better bulb" solution.

I'll go out on a further limb.
Absolute Best - HID's with a projector. The Sylvania XE7's mentioned are the best way to go.
Very good - HID Retrofit with European Code (E-Code) reflector upgrade. This ensures that you don't blind oncoming traffic with poor cutoff or no cutoff lamps.
Pretty good - Bulb Only upgrade or Bulb and E-Code reflector upgrade. This helps tons, but it also whets the appetite for you to do more upgrades later on. Bulb only upgrades are also most effective if you add higher wattage bulbs as well.
I would stay away from bulbs that have an extreme blue or purple tint. You waste more energy and potential light (that could go on the road) by the tint filtering out useful light. A very light hint of blue tint would get you a bulb that's relatively white with minimal energy absorption.

Sounds good 'cept for the Remote Switch part. Yeah, I'm like you and want a true PnP set.
? for the HID pros, is there a computer error displayed when you turn on any HID lights on the H2's. ie "low beam failure" ?

No. The computer does not know what type of bulb is in the unit. The Xe7 is as close to plug and play as you can get.
