Just curious if there are any discussions about a new turbo for the I5?? I have heard very positive things about the current power so why are people so stuck on numbers? Thanks

theres a link on my site to a Q and A w/ susan docherty, she's the marketing GM of Hummer and she talks about a possible 'alpha' H3...

a diesel in a H3 ?? I think I would love that combination or even the turbo? What a life this could be.....

I believe from what I have heard that the diesel will only be in the H3'3 built in Africa. I don't think you will see the factory turbo, either. South Africa has a contract to build 13,000 a year for 6 years, and our plant will be suppling them with a lot of assemblies for them. North American content will be ruffly 80-85 percent.

Love her statement, "Hummer doesn't own XM." GM doesn't own XM either.

It's in the Press section in this forum, and to actually point to an answer to the question. She suggests that the turbo is still in the works and a very good possibility.

I've read a couple of articles that say there might be a 3.7 I-5 and poss a v-8.

I would prefer a supercharger for more low-end torque. I have heard rumors about the 5.3L V8, displacement on demand, that is currently in some mid-sized cars.

same plant...same engine? every other car basiclly has an SS why not the colorado? and why you're there just drop an LS2 in the H3

Is there such a thing has having to much engine in a hummer this size?? Isn't it designned for a smaller engine to match its weight to power/torq ratio?? I haven't done much 4wheeling yet, but isn't the idea to use low rpms and crawl. What would the advantages really be

Not sure there would be any advantage off-road but it sure would be nice if you could have the best of both worlds

Don't know if that is really possible though

From looking under the hood, whatever they do cannot extend much farther forward. That is one reason why I believe they did not go to the 275 hp I6 (same as the I5, but missing one cylinder).

Remember GM is running a business. They have to meet many goals (which are moving targets)before things like engine upgrades are woven into production. The H3's acceleration performance is on par with the H2's.

One problem is that magazines have to write What's hot and What's not. If the H3's acceleration was on par with the upper end SUV, they would still find something to complain about. I've done some research to see how the H3 actaully compares to a wide variety of vehicles. Here are some 0 - 60 MPH time (data from various published magazine tests):

H3 - 10.2 sec.
Ford Expedition - 10.5 sec.
Dodge Ram quad cab - 10.2 sec.
Land Rover Freelander - 10.6 sec.
Toyota Sienna - 10.1 sec.
Toyota RAV 4 - 10.9 sec.
Toyota 4Runner - 10.4 sec.
Buick Rendezvous - 11.4
Chrysler PT Cruiser - 11.6 sec.
Nissan Xterra - 11.5 sec.
Ford Escape XLT Sport - 10.6 sec.
Hummer H2 - 10.2 sec.
Jeep Liberty - 10.1 sec.
Subaru Outback - 11.8
Volkswagen Passat - 11.5
Dodge Stratus - 10.4
Mazda MPV - 10.0
Mitsbuishi Outlander - 11.6
Subaru Baja - 10.7
Subaru Legacy - 10.9
Volkswagen Jetta - 14.0
Subaru Imprezza - 10.0
Dodge Caravan - 11.4
Chevy Venture - 11.0

There are many more to this list.

If you read the mags the acceleration is so severe you'll never be able to merge on a highway and the H3 is all-so-slow. Look at the reviews for Ford Expedition and see if the acceleration was mentioned in the What's not.

My beef with the wimpy 220hp engine is indeed relative. In a world of Hemi powered Jeeps and fast cars, the pokiness of the H3 is not good. Sure, not much out-of-the-box will beat its off-road prowess, but most off-road destinations require a lot of on-road travel, so street performance IS important.

One of the cheapest SUVs today, the 2005 Xterra, sports a 265hp engine, that can propel the X from 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. While I don't expect any Hummer to offer numbers like that, it would be nice to see the H3 move from the bottom of the pack in acceleration to somewhere in the middle.

I love the H3, its engineering, its exterior design, its terrific interior, but it's just that engine that keeps me from signing up for one. I'm not interested in the high-power forced induction Alpha version of the H3, I just want a better powerplant that can motivate 4700 pounds of Hummer confidently in traffic.

power is over-rated imo. i came from a 333HP BMW M3 friggin rocket that was not much slower 0-60 than a ferrari 360 modena (i got ~4.8 sec 0-60). you know what? i wanted more power since i got so used to it. you can't get much better than 4.8 sec unless you go exotic. i'm plenty happy with the H3's power. i didn't buy it for stop light racing!!! it merges on the highway just fine.
