I've had good results with sound deadening in my old 4X4s by using Dynamat under the carpet (double thick under the back carpet) and in the doors. Plus, I have enough of the stuff in the basement for another project and once you get things apart it's easy to install. Tackling the headliner is something I will never try again (the voice of experience). I went out and looked at the door panels and they're not as easy to pop off as I thought. Anyone got any suggestions on how to start with those side panels or will I have to call the service department?

I have used Dynamat in a lot over vehicles and it is great. Very good suggestion Jim.

The door trim panel appears (according to the GM service manual) to be easy to remove. Remove the switches, it appears they just pry up, similar to other GM vehicles, and disconnect the connector.
There is one screw at the door lock handle (under a small cover that pries off), two screws by the large pull handle.
Remove those screws, and the trim panel is now retained only by Christmas tree fasteners, so you just pull the panel off the door frame.

Yep, that worked great, THANKS!! I also found O'Riley's Auto Stores make a combination window crank/door panel trim puller. It looks like a flat piece of metal with grooves and holes, but it worked great to pop out the Christmas tree fasteners. I only saw the one screw by the handle, but there are two, and once I got going, the whole thing only took about 15 minutes.
