Default Fuel tank question

I have noticed that if I fill my tank with it at 1/2, that it will only take about 6 or 7 gal to fill.. isn't it a 23 gallon tank? Shouldn't that number be a little higher, like 10-12 gal to fill?

I have also noticed that in both of my h3's that if you fill it to the top, you will only get about 30-40 miles before the gauge shows it back to the F on the gauge.. In the wifes jeep and my other cars I have known, if you top them off, you can get 50-75 miles before the needle gets past the F mark...

Anyone else notice this? Or am I in a very unique situation..

Secondly, is there a low fuel warning of some sort? I never let it get that low to find out.. But I may just to see how much it will take..

Thanks for the replies!

I also get about 30 miles for it to come back down to the F if it was topped off. There is a low fuel warning. When you reach the low fuel level you hear a chime (like the open door sound) and in the DIC your see the message "LOW FUEL". if you press the stem it will go away but after a while it will come back again. There is no light on the Instrument cluster that shows a low fuel warning like in most vehicles, its just on the DIC (not that another light is needed). After the initial warning you have about 3 gallons left, which is in most situations plenty.

i only filled my tank once and i only filled 19 gallons and it was empty so i thought the tank only holds 20, if its more then i got much worse gas mileage than i thought! Not good! And also when i fill my car it goes past full the needle shows like full plus 20 percent

Mine also goes past full when I top off. It also seems to go down faster on the the first half of the tank than the last half.

When you fill the tank, the automatic shut off will stop filling once the fuel reaches the top of the tank. I believe that the tank itself is in fact 23 Gal.

I found though, after the auto shut off, that if you very slowly fill the tank up and stop, and again, and stop, and again, etc. that the vehicle will take another 3 gallons of fuel and top off right to the top of the filler neck.
Be aware that this will take an extra 10 minutes.

As long as you're in no rush, and enjoy people watching like I do, the extra time is no bother, and plus, I leave the station with 26 gallons of fuel.

Same here, I've even tried to wait for the gas in the tank to settle but it still overflows

You divide the miles by the gallons required to fill the tank at that time, fuel mileage has nothing to do with the maximum gallons a tank can hold.

You're absolutely correct. You have to fill, then stop and let it settle, fill then settle, and keep this up.
Trust me, I do it; And the truck will take an extra 3 gallons. Almost exactly 3.
