Just a quick question. Thinking about an SUT (leased) instead of an F150 FX4 (buy).
Will a motorcycle (dirt bike) fit in the bed with the midgate and tailgate down? I was wondering if the front tire/fender would fit under the roofline against the folded backseat.
I don't want to trailer them.
I have seen them attached to the roof at a 45 degree ange, but that just looks like a hassle to load.

not going to happen. I wondered myself, but I do not think it would be a good idea to even try. what is the wheel base of your bike(s)? How far out is the tip of the front tire from the handle bar/headlight area?

Bike is 7' long. midgate down and tailgate up says the bed is 6"0. So my guess is that with the tailgate down the length would work. Just don't know if the tire will fit under the roofline.
Fender could be removed, but I don't know the height of the tire vs. the opening in the midgate??
Just looking for anyone who may have tried it. I really want the SUT but might have to stick with a traditional pickup for "practical" reasons, which suck!

You could have a cool looking cycle ramp and standup mounting built and it would add to the looks of the SUT. you would'nt be able to add that neat slant back when it comes out. the next thing would be a trailer, lol.
I would get a SUT and small bike trailer, over a pickup any day.

If you leave the tailgate down, what would you do with the spare?

Have to take it off for the bike trips, but they are only local day trips.
Weekend adventures usually involve my buddys weekend warrior trailer to sleep in.
How hard is it to remove the spare and bracket?

not hard, but you would need to put the plate some where. I have seen kits.
why do you not want a trailer? I use a 6X12 enclosed trailer. But you can get really cheap open ones.

To do that you'll neeed to remove the spare tire and carrier. The carrier swings out way to the right when opened far enough to drop the tailgate. FWIW, you'll also not be able to install a tonneau cover.

The rear window height is slightly more than 12 inches. Combine that with the variables you already know and the specs in the picture below and you should be able to calculate your answer.

I do believe you're pioneering this one.

WOW! Great measurement pic, THANKS!
I don't want the trailer because I have nowhere to store it. Bike needs to go from the garage to the truck.
As you can see I am really trying to make this work. I want the SUT, but not sure if it is really practical as a true truck.

Rodster, thanks. Boating is my full time hooby in the summer. Trying to get back into dirt bikes now that my kid is 7 and can (kinda) ride.
I just really want the SUT.

RRX, another option is a Moto-Tote, which is a bike hauler that mounts in your receiver hitch. It's what I use to haul my XR400 when I don't feel like going get the trailer out of storage. http://www.mototote.com/

Dug, great vid!
TX, I forgot about those, that would solve the problem. I could still put the xr50 and gear in the bed

I don't have a dirtbike, and don't know much about them...but I noticed in MotorTrend 7/2005 for the BFGoodrich ad, there's a bike mounted in the bed with the gate down, Looks like a ramp so the front wheel sits on the roof... It's a pretty sweet pic, if you want I can try to scan it when I get home...

Nice product. Does it clear the spare?

doubtful. plus don't know how much stuff I would want hanging off the back of my rig. I would still pull the spare for the day.
Check out my post on lease price on an SUT and tell me what you think?
Thanks guys!
