I am working on designing the perfect Roof Rack, and need ideas for what you would like to see in a roofrack. No idea is too extreme or too stupid, brainstorming is how the best ideas become a reality!
Yes...There will be huge discounts for folks that offer great ideas, and I think I will add $ for folks that are overly critical !

Thanks,

That reminds me. I ordered some heavy duty 36" drawer slides and am going to get my dad to help me build a custom box to put in the back. I am not spending $1500 on the one that's being offered out there and it not satisfy my needs.

It's going to have a magnetic controlled fail secure dead bolt lock with a hidden remote release switch. I also bought a stainless steel 30" bar to use as the pull handle. I am thinking of building it out of 1" laminated fiberglass or 3/4" plywood and 2x4s. Build some moveable dividers in the drawer and have a recessed rifle storage underneath the drawer. The drawer will have to be raised off the floor of the truck to clear the bottom of the back where the door latches, leaving a "hidden" place underneath the drawer.

Not to be hi-jacking the thread or anything, but anybody have any other good ideas for this tool drawer. It will be similar to the one Jason is selling here: http://www.h2source.com/201-400-2.htm

Mine will have dividers in the drawer, no visible lock and a pull handle that goes all the way across the front of the drawer.

No, I want to proudly display his dead carcass spread eagle with his fat head over the front of a roof rack. I'll duct tape those dumb f*cking glasses and hat on so they won't blow off during the winter months.

I've seen a rack with a locking tool box on it before, on the top of a Disco. It looked really nice and practical too!
Thanks for the idea.

I've already called sooooo many places trynig to figure out who made the one for the H2H. Snugtop laughed and siad there isn't a big enough market for them to produce one. The snug top is at a differnet angle and I think the bed width is different also.

looks like you are going to make the prototype in your garage out of cardboard and "duct tape."

I had the truck vault in my 03, now in my garage, and it was great for stashing tools and gear and my shotguns, but my dog kennels would not fit on top. Now I have the SUT and it is too long by 2". I do like the truck vault one, esp when I only paid like $300 for it on E BAy.

Full width and I added the shotgun dividers inside myself. I used auto. carpet to line the insisdes. It helps to have those dividers in there, keeps the shells seperated and the other gear away from the hunting stuff. I may use this in the SUT yet. I just don't know if I really want to use up all of that room. My recovery gear is already is that side comp. in the bed. custom dog boxes may get built and take up that whole bed anyhow, unless osmeone can figure out where I can get that slant back from the H2H at?

Hey Timgco,
I had a carpenter friend of mine make a "Truckvault" like box in the past on my previous Tahoe. If you go to the Truckvault website they have dimensions and materials used in their descriptions (hint). However, if you build one be aware that if you don't use enough reinforcement/thick enough material for the top then the top sags a bit and makes closing the drawer difficult. Esp if you have heavy stuff on top, like a bird dog. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Thanks. I did build one for my 03 before I found the truck vault. I used 3/4". It was heavy as hell, but worked great. the truck vault was more of an accident. I found it on E bay really cheap. now both of my freinds are getting good use out them.
I'll be building one for the SUT some day. Just after I get my slant back.

As I said before, I will be happy to build a slant back for free to the person willing to leave his sut at my shop for a few days ......... all others $2000, as I will have the mold for fiberglass slant back.

That was Tim that has the truck vault and, yes, I do believe it was in his '03 SUV that he recently traded in for his new SUT.

Thats why I was throwing the hints if he wanted to send it to me so I could give it a new home. Hell I have already spent $300 and don't have any material to build the box and drawer yet.

Hey Tim, was that truck vault the full width version or the one for when you keep the spare inside?

Dear Paragon,

I have looked at a lot of these. Many are made by companies equipping police vehicles. Te material I am looking at most closely is aluminum. I choose it because it has the thinnest walls and, therefore, yields the greatest capacity. Between the 2 drawer sides and the 2 cabinet sides, you can lose 4 or more inches of width. The one I’m looking at most closely is made by Huskyliners

http://www.huskyliners.com/storageboxphotos.html

and sold here

http://www.premierhummer.com/h2_custom_storage_box.html.

The one for the H2 should just be coming into production.

Tools, off-road gear, ammo, certain weapons from time to time, some ERT equipment, first aid, just a smorgasbord of whatever I can get crammed in there. It needs to be secure because I would like to be able to leave some of the stuff in there and all that crap starts to add up if someone were to break in.
