Hello all - I have finally justififed (to my wife) the need for a roof rack. I'm home after surgery and have spent a good bit of time reading much of the previous roof rack posts. However, I still have some questions and would LOVE to see some pics of your roof rack installs.
I'm obviously considering the Gobi racks and had a few questions regarding those. 1 previous post by Sandra mentioned that they'd have something out to accommadate the snowboard rack but I couldn't find anything about it on their site?
http://elcova.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/5106011751/m/919608...316033132#1316033132
So..
?1 - Is there someway to mount a snowboard rack with the Gobi racks?
?2 - For those with Gobi racks, any issues/regrets, etc.
I also like the look of the this SMA rack: http://www.smahummer.com/detail.jsp?cid=8&pid=734.
? - Does anyone have this rack? How is it? Any issues, likes/dislikes?
? - Can the SMA accommadate a snowboard carrier?
? - It appears to leave the sunroof completely unblocked - is that the case?
? - Can you stand on this one like the Gobi rack?
For either of these racks, I would want the sunroof completely unblocked, which I know Gobi takes care of.
Additionally, there was a post where someone had a Gobi rack w/out the tire mount cut out BUT had it customized with an bracket to mount the tire w/the ubolt: http://elcova.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/5106011751/m/983603...346030743#3346030743
Is this still an option through Gobi?
Is Sandra still out there? With Gobi? Do we get a discount being H2Source members?
I appreciate any advice you guys&gals can offer as most of the posts I reviewed were in 03 & 04.
Thanks in advance !!!
-Matt

I did the same thing and couldn't find where anyone said anything (good or bad) about the SMA rack.
On the other hand, I did find loads of people who had nothing but good things to say about GOBI. I bought a GOBI rack and liked it so much I just bought another. Sure, GOBI is a bit more pricey but it's a real pleasure to own something that's so well built and looks so good.

Have you been to GOBI
There are many pics on this site with the full size rack/ spare tire. you'll have to search for those. If you plan on putting the tire up top and leaving it up there, I would get the rack with the tire cradle.

Can you still use the sunroof with stealth rack for the SUT?
And how much taller is it than the factory roofrack cross bars?

I'm still wating on the rear Manik rack to come in. When it gets here, I'll post a picture. It comes in front and rear piecs. Front is already here.
Couldn't you attach Yakima or Thule snowboard clamps to the rack some way?

Dennis has the SMA. He hardly ever uses it.

All SUT racks come with the sunroof opening.
Goalkeeper, It sounds like you need a rack to hold your tire up there 24/7 and also have your snowboard rack on at the same time. The Gobi rack will let you do this. If the garage is out already, than I would go with the fullsize rack with the tire mount.

Just a question...
What advantage would there be to having a super strong roof rack? If you have one that will hold the cargo and not bend, wouldn't that be fine? I'd think an ultra heavy duty one would be a waste.
I can see needing something strong for a grille guard or rear bumper guard.
Just wondering.

I have the GOBI stealth rack. It is by far the greatest thing I have had on my Rig. I would have to say that they are second-to none.

You can make them yourself with supplies from Lowe's.

Hey Ken / Tim Thanks for the replies. I appreciate the responses and did get a few answers.
I would like to see some pics of the various racks.
As of now, I can't put my H2 in my garage and was debating a remodel of the garage but ruled that out. Also, we take alot of long trips 4+ hours w/ a big furry golden retreiver (Chewbacca) and his cute ass takes up the entire way back - sans 3rd seat and spare. So, we usually have the 2nd row stacked to the ceiling
I like to Gobi racks - with or w/o the tire carrier, especially if the snowboard rack is compatible.
So, the garage is out. Therefore, I'm not as concerned about height. The main ? is Gobi or SMA and then which Gobi.
I would still like to know if the SMA rack accommadates a snow board rack? Can you stand on it? Does SMA make a ladder?
So thanks again for the repsonses and if you guys have any additional info, please post.
Thanks!!
-Matt

Matt, to answer your questions:
1st you have to decide what style Gobi rack you would want. Stealth or full size. What type of clearance is needed for you garage? This is why I have had a stealth rack on my 03 SUV and my 05 SUT. I am also putting one on our H3. I prefer the low stance of this rack. I have mounted a tire to my stealth rack by simply taking a Yakima spare tire mount and drilling out the holes to secure it down better. However, Gobi can put this mount in there too without having that cut out like on the full size rack. Your Ski rack will attach to the bars on the Gobi racks also. Just make sure when ordering to let them know of you intentions for that rack so that you can have the extra bar in there. The SUT racks are all set up this way always.
As for installation: It will take you around an hour without the lights. You remove your existing cross bars and use the new hardware to secure the brackets to your factory tracks. Very simple. We have had six people up on my SUV stealth rack and had know issues at all.
Sandra and Paul are the owners of Gobi, but do not frequent this site as much as they would like to.
If you have any more questions, please let me know.
Tim.

Thanks again fellas for the advice!! Nice Rack Ric - not sure I've ever said that to a guy nefore...
Timgco - thanks for the snowboard tidbit...
Alec - Nice point about the stealth vs full size b/c I didn't even consider the car wash
Also thanks to Ken for responding.
I've looked all ov the internet, like 10 after market sites, and still can find any additional info on the SMA so I'm leaning towards the full size Gobi.
Thanks again!!!
