I need a back tonneau type cover for off road kits, etc but have heard far too many negative comments about the tonneau itself. Is there an after market one that I should get, a locking tin box that can be secured or something else that some one has discovered that works great and can still be removed to drop the back???
What's everyone's opinion on this!!!

When open on th efactory cover, it does not touch anything. however, you don't want this open while loaded down. It won't stay open either. This way no one gets their hands shopped off.

The bed rails are quite a bit wider than the roof rails. Back in the day I was thinking of getting another roof bar and putting it back there like the concept, but after some measuring it definitely will not fit.
rodster - Are the bed-rack mounts the same as the roof rack? Assuming no tonneau and using the rails.

Tim, your Gobi didn't attach to the bed rails. What did it attach to and do you have a close-up pic of it? I'm thinking about a Gobi for the rear, but would like to know.

No aftermarket to date.
I will tell you that when I had my SUT, I had that cover and it was great. I also had the GOBI bed rack on top and could haul all kinds of stuff under the cover and it was stay dry. Coolers, H2O cans, Gas cans, bikes, coul dbe mounted on top.

Rod is dead on! It mounts to the cover. When GOBI built these, we mounted it on my bed cover and out three people up there, jumped up and down, took the rack back off and not a dent. So it's built and secured just as tough as their roof racks.
You do have to drill four holes and get spacers to go in there to guide th bolts. It comes with new gas shocks so you can still lift the cover and it will stay in the UP position.
Th eother option is to order it to it mounts to the bed rails. It uses a modified bracket an T Nuts to hold it into the factory track.
This rack does not interfere with the operation of the factory cover or midgate.

While we're discussing all these attributes one thing I learned about this rack/cover combo is that when you open it, you don't want to maintain control of the lid as it opens. Once it gets going, there's a lot of momemtum from the weight of the rack, and the light-duty aluminum piano hinge is not meant to withstand that type of abuse. Not to mention that the tonneau itself is just a very thin-guage skin wrapped around a styrofoam core.

I really want to get both the cover and the killer Gobi rack - just waiting on spare change.

I have the gobi bed rack from Tim, it attaches to the tonneau or the bed rails, you just have to tell gobi which way you are going to mount it. it comes w/ new shocks if you mount it to the tonneau so it will still lift itsself. It rocks--I highly reccommend it as so many things dont seem to fit in the bed and you can just strp them to the bed rack.

Rodster, so how does it work when attaching the cover and rack on the back?? Can't picture it.
Do you have the same set up so I can see it at Mojave?

Neither the cover or the rack attaches to the rear window/midgate assembly. The window goes down like it does now and so does the midgate.
If you fold the midgate, you still have access to the length of the cargo area. Since the cover isn't easily removed and installed, once it's on you are limited to carrying cargo that's no taller than the sides of the bed. You could drive with the cover up but that's probably not a good idea.
The rack bolts to the cover or if you don't have the cover, the rack mounts can be turned and the rack mounted on the siderails, in the fore/aft tracks. (BTW, I was told you can also fit your roof rails in those same tracks.)

I was told you can have the gobi bed rack on there with the cover or without. It comes, or you can ask it to come with the hardware kit you desire.

No, that is not correct.

Yes, it's overpriced and suitable only for groceries, if even that. It holds only 40 pounds.
Milk crates and duffle bags aren't the best looking things but they work well, hold a lot of stuff and don't break when you pack them.
