Default Home security

A couple of days ago a neighbour of mine was a victim of a home invasion - at 4.30am four armed men broke into his house, pistol whipped him, locked him and his wife in the bathroom and spent 45 minutes in the house loading stuff into a vehicle in the street. She apparently managed to trigger a silent alarm - the cops turned up in 2 minutes - they caught 2 of the attackers - the other 2 escaped out the back.

9 stitches later he is back at home being thankful that he is still alive.

So I was wondering what home security measures some of you guys use - equipment, dogs, lights etc. And I dont want to hear Guns Guns Guns - I want to know how you are alerted to an intruder in the first place not how you send them to hell afterwards.

I use a system that basically puts a motion detection perimeter around my property - if you have reached my front door then you have already triggered up to as many as 5 alarms.

The detector heads are weatherproof - detect movment up to 100 feet and transmit a signal back to the base station up to 2000 feet away. The base station has the ability to monitor 14 detection zones. Everything is battery operated - the base station has mains supply but has a 18 hour battery back up.

So anyone entering my property at night is going to alert me long before they get anywhere near the house.

Then they get introduced to "My little friend"

I have something similar on the trees outside that provide an audible alert inside. Then there's the GSD, and finally the main house alarm system.

It's the little white thing on the tree next to the truck.

We have an 80 pound dog that sleeps on the ground floor of our house. If anyone sets foot anywhere within the perimiter of the yard around our house, he goes nuts and barks like crazy. We never trained him, he just does it instinctively.

It's similar to that but is X10 and works with some of the other X10 stuff I have where it will trigger a couple of interior lights, is controllable through some remotes and the computer, etc.

I can watch 8 points around and in my house via internet 24/7. Being a minute away from home helps also. And the usual ADT Alarm system.

At night.......I sleep well knowing my Messican Rat is watching over things.

The spam emails is your area of business..... that is part of what you do, right? Telemarketing, spamming... all the same.

You have no idea what I am even talking about concerning my X10 setup. You just want to play you stupid little games.

Go read a book to your daughter or something constructive.

X10 works pretty good but I agree that bluetooth and 802.** is more reliable. The problem with wireless is that it is a lot easier to hack. X10 can also have problems if you have a lot of noise on you lines. We have several chips and X10 development kits that we produce but they certainly are huge sellers. Next hot thing for wireless is probably going to be ZigBee. We are looking at a few home control designs based on ZigBee.

I am guessing there is a lot of noise on the lines and that was the problem. Got what you needed via wireless though

I use the same motion detection cameras as Alec, probably. It's set to start recording when there is motion. They are more used in areas where people are likely to mess with my stuff and run, like garage/driveway. Then just an alarm system...for the windows/doors and so on. Then an ak47 with 30 rounds to send anyone who gets in, away.

It's pretty basic, but I plan to go with a much more advanced system w/home automation after I move...I'll be in a gated community, so probably wont need it too much, but security is the coolest.
