My truck is now in the shop going on its third day. The dealer is having to work with GM on the mainland to try and figure out the problem. I am curious if any of you have run into the following issue and if you have what was the cause.
Over the last week after driving for about an hour or so the tranny would get loud and start to whine. There were no grinding noises at anytime. The tranny heated up to about 200 degrees and at that point it cut out/disengaged or at least that what it seemed. The truck was still running and was in gear but it was almost like it shifted into neutral. I would shift through the gears but it did not make a difference. The engine would revv but the truck would not move. I shut the truck down for a couple of minutes to let it cool off and it would work fine until it heated up again. I called the dealer and they got it in the shop right away.
Is there a sensor or something that would disengage the transmission to prevent further damage once a certain temperature is reached? The service department is dumbfounded by this and have never seen this before. At no point did any service lights come on. The truck only has 17k on it.
If anyone has any insight into this I would love to hear it. Thanks

Ain't that the truth. On my last visit to the dealer I hope I never have to go back to, I asked for a rotate. I picked it up and discovered, because of my markings, that they did the rotate wrong. I told him, you did it wrong. He consulted the tech, they both said they did it right. I showed them the manual page showing the prescribed pattern (I'm still running stock). They still said they did it right. I told them I had marked the tires and could tell what they'd done. They caved (surprise)!!!! I won't go into what ensued.

My transmission just failed today with only 20k miles on it. I was offroading today with the NorCal Hummer Group at Hollister. The Low 4wd will not switch back to 4Hi even though the light says it is back on 4Hi. Next thing you know the engine just revs with no movement. I had it towed to my dealer even though they were already closed for the night. It is sitting in front of their service entrance next to their new vehicles fully covered in mud. It should be good advertising for the dealer as long as the customers does not find out about the faulty transmission.

It would be cheaper to tow it next door and then tow it back. That's about 75.00 vs a transmission work that can easily reach the thousands

For what it's worth, a good trans tech can install one in about 3 hours. A bad one takes about a day.

It is so strange how Hummer dealers are so different from one another.
I just wanted to tell You about a buddies experience and how they deal with me.
He was out in the mud and got stuck factory tires.
He rocked it back and forth to get unstuck and if You look in manual it says voids warranty if You do that so do not do that. Well He busted transfer case wide open. You could look up in the bottom side. He calls the dealer and tells the service manager who also I deal with and the guy sends a wrecker and picks H2 up and takes it to the ser. dept. Buddies goes home.
They wash it get in the air and he told them He had rocked it. They put new transfer case in and warranty it. Gave it back in 4 days. He never heard anything about and did not pay a penny.
I'm good friends with the service manager and they know I'm cutting and chopping to customize for shows as well as power. He asked me in the begining to just always call Him before I do anything so He can tell me if it would work out OK, if We had warranty. So I have almost a rebuilt H2 from the ground up and he has OK'd everything.
I called last week with some items i wanted to change out on the engine and figured i would get shot down on this one. I asked if I had a super special set of heads sponsored for me from a major perf. company how would that work out.
Expecting My bubble to be burst He says well if I was going to be offered i would take them and I see no reason We cannot find a way to warranty them. He then said for what Your doing it is going to be an improvement over the factory and with the boost Your running it will just be a common sense thing to remove the air restriction that sets right in the middle of Your engine to tail pipe swap so far. He continued with, actually makes Me feel better about You not damaging the engine.
So go figure but, these guys do understand. He has said that about ever engine part change I have done. I told Him I was asking and wanting a quick answer as the rig is stripped to the metal and primed and We would like to do it before it goes in paint.
I asked why do You do it and I read others have trouble over light bulbs. He said it just is the focus of the dealer. We are extremely performance oriented. Your the first customer We have had that really wanted to do a SEMA quality custom job, I hope any way. Plus He says if You move in a way that if problems arise We'll just pull the aftermarket off and install the factory if it came to that. Then He said, We get questioned very rarely when We warranty.
I have thought about it before but, I know now for sure before I go buy any new vehicles I'm going to go to the service dept. and visit with those guys first. I want to get reference from them on customs they have serviced and if they will not do it then I'm driving off even if it cost another $500 or $1000 to buy one with good service.
I'm really sorry to see the hard time you have had it just should not be that way with a rig like that and it considered to most I have talked to is the prestige line of vehicle to be a dealer for. My dealer has four lines of cars but, Hummer is their pride and joy and they are owned by national company called United Auto traded on the stock exchange I think and many of the other Hummer dealers are most likely owned by them.
So if it is fair or not is the dealers call but, normally when a Hummer pulls up for service they move it to the top of the list at My dealer. They justify that they have quite a few technicians and 2 or 3 are Hummer certified so to justify there extra expense they move them to a Hummer as soon as it can. My dealer is just now getting the Hummer service etc. moved over to the new building that all the dealers built. So if You can find out it may pay to find one owned by United. Then again it is most likely the management installed but, they leave these guys alone.
Your case is different for the lack of choice but, I'm glad it is working out for you in the end.

As a cautionary note, try to mark your important parts before taking the truck in for major service. A shot of bright orange spray paint works on the metal. Also, don't be afraid to mark your tires when you take your truck in for rotation.

Anyway you can grab a garden hose and rinse out all the mud before the service advisors see it Monday morning? I know it will seem very odd to be washing your truck at the service entrance but I would be more concern if they try to give you crap about offroading = no warranty

Sounds more like a transfer case issue.

My buddy was a GM mechanic until a few months ago (now jaguar - rover). He was telling me how a less than perfect score on the survey really hurts the dealership. That's why the dealership sometimes sends you little notes almost begging you to give 100% satisfied scores.

Well here is the latest on the tranny issue. Going on day 4 without the truck. Talked with the dealer last night to see if they have figured it out and surprise they hadn't. They are having a hard time because no codes are coming out from the computer tests and they are baffled. The only thing they could definetly tell me was the tranny is bad but before they replace it GM HQ wants them to try all of these others tests to ensure that if they replace the tranny the problem will be fixed. Then he proceeds to tell me that GM does not like to replace things if they do not have too.
Anyways by the sounds of it I am going to get a new tranny not because I need it but because GM HQ would like have it so they can run tests on it because they have not seen this exact issue before. They told me that I am going to need to hold on til late friday and maybe saturday or possibly into next week because they are waiting on parts to come in so they can run the tests and replace possible bad parts. I am a little irritated about how long it is taking but I just wanted my truck back fixed.

Well as of this morning it is now three weeks and no HUMMer. Talked with the service guys on Friday and they said that I should have it back by Wednesday at the latest. The new tranny should be in by Monday and they may start working on it or wait til tuesday. I am sure that they will wait til tuesday to start.
I doubt I will ever be told what actually happened to the tranny. Once they pull it they are sending it back to GMHQ so they can run tests.
Hopefully they will put the truck back together right the first time and I will not have to take it back down.
