Wondering how you use your truck.

Over the years my trucks have pretty much been all of the above. Not really stricly for wheeling though, there is not enough wheeling around to justify having a truck soley for that intended purpose.

I used to use them for daily drivers, these day's I stay away from that. It allows me to do what I want with the truck when I want, from a mod/service/repair standpoint. It is nice to not have to have it running at all times. But I do drive my truck very frequntly, at least a few days a week. Sometimes its driven for a month straight, other times it sits or is being worked on for a month at a time. It depends. Right now the truck is sitting being worked on. The rear brakes are being repaired and sorted out, from there it will go straight to the tire shop for some new shoes, then over to the alignment shop, and from there back home to be torn down for a bit. It will propabably be a few weeks before its totally back on the road. In not to long I'll be doing a body lift on it, so it'll be down again. Personally, I enjoy not having to rely on the truck every day. I like being able to tinker with it.

I would love to have two vehicles, but for the foreseeable future, I will only be able to have one. I just couldn't afford to keep two vehicles. But I can see where having another to use while tinkering with the H1 would be nice. Also, since I only would have one vehicle, it would be #4. My H2 is filling that role right now. And it's a PITA when it's out for maintenance or repairs.

Well. Like I said I used mine for a daily driver for over three years, its do able, but can be a headache. My 98 though it had constant problems always got me from point a to b and back with no issues, after I replaced the PMD, which failed literally two weeks after I got the truck. my 97.5 has been a bit more trouble, the head gasket went which made it rather hard to drive. And from there I have had problems with the brakes, more then once. Aside from that it too has been a very reliable daily driver. The key is being able to fix it quickly when it breaks, you need a good mechanic, and a fast source of parts. Though these trucks are not without their issues, generally I have had great luck driving them on a day to day basis. Its the little **** that tends to break and make driving less pleasurable, such as HVAC issues, or little electrical gremlins.

What is a PMD?

Luckily, where I'll be living for the next few years, there's a great public transit system, so if something is down, I can still get around. And I have that mechanic friend who lives there would I hope would give me a hand. Actually, I know he would because he LOVES H1's.

I see some mid-90's on eBay for ~$30,000, but then again, they're almost 10 years old now... I'm looking at some of the older H1's Lynch has in stock. I like those guys a lot, and they have always been good to me. Plus those go through a rigorous inspection before sale... I think about 2000 MY is where I'm looking as far as price point / age.

Any suggestions?

The PMD (FSD) is the "driver" that controls the injector pump. If it fails the injector pump fails, and the truck will cut out.

The people I know with Y2K trucks like them, they seem to be pretty reliable as far as an H1 goes. I would shy away from the attractive prices of private sale used trucks. The price may be right, but it could cost you. If you find one you really want have it inspected at a local dealership of your choice, make sure it has ALL service records. Lynch sells a great truck, they do put everything they need to in to a truck to make it right. I'd say its hard to go wrong with them.

The other thing to really take into account is service/parts costs. I do not know you financial situation and it none of my business so I wont ask but they are expensive. My truck just got all new brakes for about 600.00 in parts, needs a new rear caliper 175.00 (and I STOLE IT at that price), needs tires 1700-1800, batteries 400.00. See what I'm sayin, they're awesome but make sure you've got the coin to keep it on the road.
